Sun—kissed and sandy, Jake, Kade, and Finch cruised through the familiar streets of San Diego. Warm Californian breeze drifted in through the halfway open windows, drying away water still clinging to their bodies. The sun was contemplating going down, stuck halfway down the horizon.

It was that one perfect minute.

Tom and Kade used to love this part of the day — sunrise, sunset.

He'd wake her up, bundle her in a flannel, and then he would cradle her on his lap out on the back balcony. There they would sit, just to watch that singular moment where the sun hung between night and day or day and night. Ice used to tell her that it meant they were suspended in time, separated from it. He said it was kind of like flying, caught between the earth and sky. In that one perfect minute, you were free.

Kade wondered if Tom was looking out the window now, too, thinking about this one perfect minute: caught between day and night.

It was like the sun was unwilling to go to sleep.

Finch was much the same. She was fighting sleep in the backseat, her favorite stuffed duck tucked under her arm and her chubby cheek pressed against the side of her carseat. Jake had 'Take Me Home, Country Roads' playing on repeat because apparently that was Finch's new favorite song. It was enough to make Kade threaten to jump out the car door on the highway. Jake put on the child locks. B—stard.
