STEVE'S CAR WAS quiet, even with the music that played softly in the background.

Kate would've fidgeted with the radio, playing something other than the generic pop music that was playing, but she liked watching Steve's fingers tap the steering wheel to the beat. She knew he liked that exact radio station, even if he couldn't tell her a single song that was playing on the radio right now. She would've gone through his glovebox to see what tapes he had, but he presumably didn't have any now that she had all of hers back. It wasn't worth trying to change it. Besides, she knew the kids probably wouldn't appreciate listening to her try to tune the radio to a station just for one song just to do it again to find another.

Whenever they pulled into the makeshift driveway of Max's trailer, Steve cut the engine to his car, putting it into park. "All right, this better be fast, Mayfield."

"Twenty seconds," she said as she got out of the car.

Steve and Kate met eyes for only a moment before he turned around to Dustin in the back, eyes glancing down to the walkie and back up to him. "That thing's got batteries in it, right?"

Dustin sighed, shaking his head slightly. "I'm not even answering that question." When Steve looked back to Kate, almost as if he was going to ask her if she knew, Dustin turned back to him. "Yes, it has batteries."

"Yeah, I got it." Steve looked down at his watch, almost as if he were watching the seconds tick by. He finally sighed, dropping his arm back down somewhat dramatically. "It's been twenty seconds."
