KATE COULD HAVE sworn up and down that someone was following her.

At first, she thought it must've been her anxiety getting the best of her. Every time she turned around, she didn't see anyone that could have possibly been following her, not until she was about a mile from her car.

She'd finally seen the woman in question. If she wouldn't have been looking for her, she probably wouldn't have spotted her at all. The woman had been following her presumably since she'd left her building, and the only reason she'd finally recognized her again was because she'd recognized her face, her clothes.

She was onto her.

Kate could only assume the woman was a government agent of some kind, probably belonging to whatever agency actually had knowledge of her sister's existence. She looked important, mostly because of her clothes, her pinbacked hair. Whoever this woman was, she was most definitely looking for her.

So much for the dumb blonde gag.

She picked up her pace slightly, not too quickly as not to avoid suspicion. She thought she might be able to lose her if she was inconspicuous enough, if she didn't panic. She couldn't freak out—she had to act like nothing was wrong.

Kate realized she had been made whenever the woman also started picking up her pace, making sure she didn't lose her. She couldn't turn around again—she had to focus on getting to her car. The agent was about thirty yards behind her. That was enough time to get inside the car, start the engine, and drive off, right? It had to be enough time.
