Chapter 1

---------------------------------------------------

"Shh they're listening" muttered Ana, scraping the leatherbound journal against the desk.

"They?" He hovered over her, taking in her presence, the warm light flickering against the spoiled wooden surface which surrounded them.

She lifted the leatherbound and that's when he saw the flattened spider, why did he even come here?

"You won't find what you're looking for, it's not there and it's not anywhere, I've tried before and they don't have it" He leaned in barely making a sound "The higher-ups would never let you get to that information."

"You underestimate me Julian."

If anyone knew anything about magic it would be Julian, it was almost insulting how dismissive she had been of him. But even then, he was of little help, the practices had been gone for a while now. He looked over which books she had already disposed of. "QUIETUS" was read in big red letters on aged pages which were all too familiar, he had once been on the same path as her, it was pointless. What did she have that he didn't?

"If you have no other reason than to significantly lower the already plummeting vibrations in this room, you may leave." She looked behind, giving him an annoyed look.

"The library is all yours." He raised his arms in defeat and began to leave, bitch.

The clock rang 12 when she woke up, raising her arm to massage her temples. Most of her classes were later in the day so she savored the leisure time. Noticing all the scrolls spread out on the carpet, her dorm was usually neat but many pages had been turned last night. Yet she hadn't gotten any closer.

There was no time to waste, she grabbed the mug which had been resting on her nightstand and took a sip of the water. Heading to the bathroom she followed her regular routine, got dressed and left the dorm.

The ancient wooden corridors reminded her of her goals and why she got into Calaris University. Finding the unknown, what the tainted minds didn't search for.

She opened the library door and headed to her usual nook; it was further in, between the dead history section which was expected because not many were in the Magus Incarnate Course. That's the closest you could get to the original sources. The world had gotten dull ever since magic had vanished, or been banned. She sat down and began reading, trying a new book she found yesterday.

Outsiders merely pondered, but at this place the ancients had no secrets. The libraries were here, Archeologists and Historians didn't bullshit, yet even in a place this unimaginable freedom didn't exist. Everything had gone to ruins on that day and the constant brainwashing didn't help. What was lost shall be found again; Although she will admit, most of all she wanted power, but the mere thrill of it all was enough. How can this be what life has to offer? She had heard her grandparents' stories. Knowledge remained and it was not enough, and much of it was either hidden or not studied anyway. It could've been exactly like the books, 'This is reality, we make our fun' Bullshit. Creo quia absurdum est.

Julian Zasper was an imprudent prick and he didn't mind it at all. There was his family and there was him, and those two were the only things that ever mattered. He was more than half way through his studies and his future was bright, his mind was the promise of that. Although at surface it remained dark, with thoughts not only ingenious but also crippling, it was one thing being able to ease through the routine required to be successful but another trying not to wander off. Life sees intelligence and confines it to what the society expects today. Grow up, lose loved ones, forget the past but don't think about the future, be present and death. That is being an adult.
