Winter gets way too much hate IMO. I mean yeah he was a jerk to Moon, but if I thought someone was gonna murder my pet, I would have attacked, Winter gave Moon a chance to explain herself at least. Also, if someone knew about an explosion before it happened, DUH people are gonna be suspicious of said person, like come on! Yes I agree he could have done things better, and I agree he was a jerk at times for no reason. But his childhood sucked, his parents were complete losers that basically just used their dragonets for bragging rights pretty much, and whenever they'd fail, they'd flip out. I am not gonna say that his childhood excuses his bad behavior, but I agree it could play a part in his coldness towards others. Now in book 7 we see his thoughts... he seems like a genuinely insecure dragon, and he even thinks at one point 'I wouldn't hurt Moon.' or something along those lines. Now come time to book 14, and he has become a much better dragon. He is less snappy and bitter, and he seemed genuinely happy to see Moon again and meet the newcomers. He also didn't seem to grudgeful at Snowfall either. Winter learns from his mistakes, and he betters himself.
