AN: I learned that Victoria's Secret was made by a man around a decade ago when I was in middle school. The story that I made in my head from then on, that Victoria's Secret was made by a trans woman, is a way better story from the reality that an old white man profiting off of women's insecurities. So here's a more flushed out version of what 6th grade me thought when I first learned Victoria's secret.
"Victoria's Secret was made by a guy?"
Amanda nodded her head rapidly while grinning at my reaction.
"How? Why? He's not a woman is he?"
"I heard 'Victoria' is his alter ego"
Even as I mouthed "oh" my mind raised more questions than answers.
As we parted ways to spread the news, I started questioning.
Can a man really have a woman as an alter ego?
How can you tell they're a woman?
Mine does.
Does Victoria take control of his body, like sleepwalking?
What if it isn't an alter ego?
How can a man and a woman exist in the same body?
Can a woman be born as a man?
And with that last question I stumbled into the concept of someone being transgender without knowing anything about it.
My mind kept that last question in a chokehold, I don't even know why, because any answer that I came up with, for example:
Why would someone make women's clothes already exist in stores?
So they can feel comfortable trying on different women's clothing without feeling awkward about going into the women's section.
Or
Why make a clothing company?
To help others who might be feeling what Victoria felt when something didn't seem right.,
would just make me think I was putting a puzzle together.
To me, this was her secret.
Victoria was born in the wrong body and was trying to make the best of it by making her own clothes without fear of judgement before being discovered for her designs and making a company called Victoria's Secret to help more people who may be going down the same road she was but now with her help and guidance.
I didn't understand why it had to be a secret yet I understood why she wouldn't want to come boast about it. I could picture people's disgusted reactions if it was widely known that a man designed women's clothes, especially if the creator's initial defense is "I am a woman too".
So I kept Victoria's secret to myself from them on.
