CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Depuis le début

[Jack, Scar, Davey, Cora, and Katherine]
We ain't come this far...
To lose

"Here they come!" Race shouted, and soon the once quiet cellar was filled with rowdy, defiant newsies ready to take matters into their own hands. Jack and Scar separated from the cluster of five first, followed by Cora and Davey, and finally Katherine, and they moved around the cellar as the newsies filtered in from the window.

[Newsies]
This is the story we needed to write
As we kept out of sight, but no more
In a few hours by dawns early light
We'll be ready to fight us a war

As the newsies descended the stairs, Scar and Jack were at the bottom to greet them. Spot Conlon, along with some Brooklyn newsies, made his way down and nodded at Scar before spit shaking with Jack. All seemed well with everyone now, and Scar couldn't be more relieved.

This time we're in it to stay
Talk about seizing the day

Jack climbed the stairs, keeping his hand holding Scar's the whole time. He stopped on the top of the stairs and turned to face the room, and Scar looked at the cellar over her shoulder.

[Jack]
Write it in ink or in blood
It's the same either way
They're gonna damn well pay!

Some of the newsies were helping Darcy with the press while others were getting in formation to receive the papers as soon as they were printed. Scar looked over the room from where she was standing near the balcony that overlooked the room, Jack beside her.

[Newsies]
See old man Pulitzer snug in his bed
He don't care if we're dead or alive
Three satin pillows are under his head
While we's begging for bread to survive
Joe, you can stop counting sheep
We're gonna sing ya to sleep
You've got your thugs with their sticks and their slugs
Yeah! but we got a promise to keep!

Scar stepped up to the metal bars that created the balcony, gathering everyone's attention in the room.

[Scar]
Once and for all if they don't mind their manners
We'll bleed 'em!
[Newsies]
Bleed 'em!

Bill handed the finished type-set article to Race, who held it up.

[Race]
Once and for all we won't carry no banners that don't spell freedom!

Scar and Jack moved down the balcony, down the stairs again, into the center of the cellar where Darcy was getting ready to print copies of the article, titled "The Newsies Banner."

[Newsies]
Finally we's raising the stakes
This time whatever it takes!
This time the union awakes, once and for all!

Race passed the paper along to the others, who passed it down in a line to where Davey was standing down by the printing press, and he handed it off to Cora, who took it excitedly and read off, "In the words of union leader Jack Kelly," Cora started, pointing to Jack, and while the newsies applauded, Jack waved it off, "We will work with you. We will even work for you. But we will be paid and treated as valuable members of your organizations."

Scar smiled as Cora handed the paper off to Spot, who took it over to Darcy.

Turning back to Davey, Cora beamed. "Riveting stuff, huh?"

"Get going," he told her, and then looked over at Katherine. "You two have got a very important man to see."

Cora looked back at Katherine, and they nodded at each other. Katherine started up the stairs ahead of Cora, who turned to Davey, placing her hand on his chest. "Keep your fingers crossed," she told him, going to turn away, when Davey caught her hand and held it there.

She looked back at him, and Davey nodded, squeezing her hand. "For us, too," he replied.

Nodding, Cora raised her other hand, showing her crossed fingers. Davey let go of her hand and Cora made her way up the stairs, over to where Katherine was waiting, and the two girls disappeared, going to do their next part of the plan.

When they were gone, Scar moved alongside the other newsies, watching as Darcy printed paper after paper.

[Newsies]
This is for kids shining shoes on the street
With no shoes on their feet everyday
This is for guys sweating blood in the shops
While their bosses and cops look away

Once the papers were finished being printed and tied into bundles, some of the newsies pushed the printing press out of the way as Davey and Jack went to the center of the room. Scar stayed moving around, making sure everyone was in position.

I'm seeing kids standing tall
Glaring and raring to brawl
Armies of guys who are sick of the lies
Getting ready to rise to the call!

Jack and Davey started to throw the bundles of papers to the newsies all around the room, who passed them on to the others, ready for them to be distributed to every working kid in New York City.

Once and for all there'll be blood on the wall if they doubt us
They think they're running this town
But this town will shut down without us
Ten thousand kids in the square
(Ten thousand kids in the square)
Ten thousand fists in the air!
(Ten thousand fists)
Joe, you is gonna play fair, once and for all!

When all the bundles had been distributed, Jack looked over at Scar, who nodded, and the two linked hands again, making their way out of the cellar with the rest of the newsies, out onto the fire escapes of the office building, where everyone stood proudly, faces hard with hard work and determination. Scar was between Davey and Jack, both boys holding stacks of their very own banner.

There's change coming once and for all
You're getting too old, too weak to keep holding on

The newsies slammed the bundles of papers to the ground, untying them, getting ready to run off into the early hours of the morning and stop kids on their way to work.

A new world is gunning for you, and Joe, we is too!
Til once and for all you're gone!

Davey looked over at Scar and Jack, nodding as they gathered the papers from the floor.

[Davey]
Once and for all!

Scar nodded in return, setting her sight on the city as it spread before them.

[Scar]
Once and for all!

Jack set his hand on the railing of the fire escape, as did the others.

[Jack]
Once and for all!

With one more defiant cry, the newsies shouted their resolve into the night, hoping it would be enough to create the change they so desperately desired.

[Newsies]
Once and for all!
