Now, he sits on one of the chairs in my kitchen, hunching over the island table with a drink cradled in his hands. It's times like these where I feel inclined to play the role of a good host and make sure he's having a good time.
At the moment, I sat with three other classmates on my couch: a prospective Nobel Peace Prize recipient, the daughter of a major CEO in Silicon Valley, and a boy partying for the last time before he goes off to an internship with the United Nations for the summer. My legs had been propped up on the coffee table for maybe too long. Maybe I needed to stretch them a little and walk around anyways.
I got up and eyed my lab partner as I approached him from behind. He smiled at me as I took a seat next to him.
"Hey Yuri," I yelled over the blasting speakers.
"Ophelia! Sick party you've got going on here."
"Oh, thanks," I grinned. "You're enjoying it?"
"Well," he started, "now that you're here, I'm sure I am."
"Aw, I'm glad," I blushed. "What's in your cup?" I ask, inspecting it a bit. "I can get you another one if you'd like."
He rotated the plastic cup in his hands, observing it as if he didn't even know what was in it. "Eh, just a vodka cran. I probably won't be needing another one after this."
"Lightweight?" I asked smugly.
"I guess so," he admitted. "You know, there's this enzyme—aldehyde dehydrogenase—that some people are deficient in, which makes them unable to process alcohol properly. Not to say I'm using that as an excuse, but it probably contributes to it."
I forgot to mention— Yuri's probably one of the smartest people I've ever met. He's set to graduate at the top of our class, if not within the top five. Naturally, his intelligence will get him as far in life as he wants to go.
"Hmm, not gonna lie Yuri, I'm just hearing a bunch of excuses. Did you drink too much already?" I joked.
"I hope not. Then that would mean I'd have to be babysat by you," he chuckled deeply with a slight rose tint to his cheeks, finishing the last of his drink.
"I'm sure I wouldn't be that insufferable of a babysitter," I pondered.
"You're right. You're lucky I like you, Ophelia."
"Since when did you get so bold?" I said, slightly perplexed by his straight-forward behavior. He always was able to speak what's on his mind from an objective standpoint, don't get me wrong, but I've never heard him express any sort of emotion so freely.
"Since I finished my second vodka cran of the night. But I swear to you, if I was sober I'd feel the same way," he admitted feverishly. I froze in place and raised a single eyebrow.
"How about I grab you some water and we can continue this?" I proposed.
"That would be nice," he said with glassy eyes. I've never really paid attention to them before, but they're an irresistible shade of crimson. They compliment his fiery passion nicely.
I was on the move again, but this time with a new goal: get Yuri slightly less tipsy. Also, talk to Yuri more. I don't think I've ever spoken to him outside of school. He didn't really ever frequent my other parties since he was always busy with his studies. Now that summer's here, though, I guess that's not the first thing on his mind anymore.
As I walked, I couldn't seem to take my mind off of Yuri. It's not like he's the most charismatic person I've ever met. More so, I fixated on the fact that Yuri Briar has been in my life all throughout high school, but I only really wanted to get to know him now.
