Chapter Twenty-eight: Translating

"It's at Starcourt-" Claudia turns and sees the front door close. "Mall-" she finishes.

Robin wipes the counter down. She and Steve were preparing to open Scoops Ahoy for the day. The sign on the door said closed but the door opens anyway. Robin sighs. "We're closed," she says in an annoyed tone. Jessica runs up to the counter and slams her hands down, startling Robin who finally looks up.

"Oh, hey-"

"Is Steve here?"

Robin jabs her thumb toward the door. "He's in the-" Jessica didn't let Robin finish as she runs toward the door, pushing it open. Jessica steps into the backroom and sees Steve coming out of the freezer, carrying a bucket of vanilla ice cream.

Steve looks up. "Hey, Jess-" 

"I'm late."

Steve sets the bucket of ice cream down onto the counter. "Late? W-what do you mean you're late? Steve glances down at the watch he sported on his wrist. "You don't have to be at work until-" 

Jessica walks over to her boyfriend. "I'm late Steve." Steve narrows his eyes. "I still don't know what you're talking about." Jessica sighs and plops a white pharmacy bag down onto the counter. She opens it up and pulls out a box. She holds it out in front of Steve, his eyes scanning the box.

His eyes widens as he looks down at his girlfriend, then back at the box and then at his girlfriend once again. "You're late?"

Jessica nods as Steve takes his sailor hat off, running his hands through his hair. "Shit. H-how did this happen?" "Well-" Steve raises a hand. "Obviously I know how it happened. Where do you think it happened?" Jessica throws her hands up into the air. "I don't know! We did it everywhere this summer." "Not everywhere-" 

"Yes everywhere, Steve. Let's see," Jessica holds up her right hand. "There was your house, my house, your car, Lover's Lake, Skull Rock-" she lists, counting each finger. "Alright, alright," Steve says gently pushing her hand down. "But we used protection at every single one of those places," he whispers, not wanting Robin to overhear their conversation. 

"Maybe the condom broke?" 

Steve shakes his head. "No. No way. We would've known." Jessica gives Steve a pointed look. "Would've we have? We never looked at it." Steve places his hands onto his hips. "Shit, you're right. So...um...did you do the test yet?" Jessica shakes her head. "I-I'm afraid." 

Steve takes Jessica's left hand into his. "Come on," he tells her as he tugs her over to the employee bathroom. "We'll do this together." Jessica nods as she and Steve disappear into the bathroom.

After doing her business, Steve read the directions allowed to Jessica who mixed the solution together. Jessica looks over at Steve. "Now what?" Steve continues to read over the directions. "We will know the truth in 20 minutes. If it's clear, we're good. If it's blue..."

Jessica nods in understanding. "Okay. In 20 minutes...we'll know the truth." 

~18 minutes later~

Robin holds out two ice cream cones to a couple "Have a nice day," she says in a monotone voice. The couple grabs their ice creams and leave. Robin looks up as a young teenage boy steps up to the counter. The boy gives her a toothless smile. 

"Hi."

"Hi."

The boy points to himself. "I'm Dustin." 

"I'm Robin."

"Pleasure to meet you. Uh, is-is he here?" Robin tilts her head at Dustin. "Is who here?"
