This was Berk. A small wayward island on the coast of who knows where south of the archipelago to anyone who can remember it. It was cold, damp, and dreary, but sturdy and home to many who live there.

Berk wasn't known for many things except for its cold summers and even colder winters, so cold back to sea would freeze over the ports, and also, until recently, its pests too. Dragons.

Huge ferocious lizards that breathe fire or spit acid or Amber. These reptiles were creatures of mass destruction and the small village managed to tame them, not as servants, but as friends.

And as you very well know, the brightest of them created a squadron of their only and finest riders. The sun started to rise on this desolate land to a new beginning, to a new day, into a new adventure.

Snotlout yawned as he sat up from his cot, stretching out his forearm over his head, and grabbing his helmet from the top of his bedpost. This day would be like any day Snotlout thought. Wake up, say good morning to his father, go on patrol, and then do whatever he thought was fun.

The boy open the door to his room and closed it behind him, and with a small creek of the floorboards, he made his way down the stairs to the dining room where his father should have been sitting in the morning, eating his meat. But he wasn't. And the boy was left there to eat breakfast alone.
