Part 43 - Protasis

"You... You're right. I need to confess soon. But when?"

"That's for you to decide~"

"Then," Y/n's resolve strengthened as she clenched her fist. "Tomorrow night. I'll tell him how I feel tomorrow night."

"Atta girl!" Gen gave her a quick hug, his support reassuring her a lot. Y/n smiled, somewhat nervous, but mostly grateful. "Let me know how it goes~"

Y/n nodded, and their conversation had finished just in time. She smelled something heavenly wafting through the air, and Y/n could almost cry with happiness. The bread had finished baking, and steam puffed from the oven as Francois brought it to the table they had been working on to cool. It smelled almost like a pie, slightly sweet and fruity. Gen held out a hand to help Y/n up as they joined the others, who were talking with wonder and excitement.

Then it dawned on Y/n, most of the villagers had never even smelled bread, let alone eat it. The whole experience was completely foreign to them, but they all looked curious and elated. Francois sliced the bread with a sharp serrated knife, and Y/n wondered when they had the time to make that as well.

That thought was soon gone as Francois set the garnished loaf of bread on the table, allowing everyone to try a slice. Y/n picked up a piece, which was warm and smelled better than anything she had ever experienced. Just one bite into it confirmed it-- this was the best bread she had ever had, modern era included. There were mixed screams and cheers of satisfaction from the villagers, even Ukyo was crying from the nostalgic food.

"Mmmph, so good," was all Y/n could manage in between bites. The flavor was sweet and nutty, the bread was chewy but not too tough. She could definitely eat this over a long voyage without complaint. She heard Senku snicker from beside her.

"Astonishing vocabulary, historian," He said sarcastically, but was content with the bread himself.

"Y'know what? I can't even retort right now. This is pure bliss," Y/n smiled, savoring the tasty snack. "If heaven is real, it's this bread."

"Does that make Francois a deity?"

"Yes," Y/n replied immediately. Francois, who was content with the satisfaction of their guests, bowed.

"Desire equals justice!" They exclaimed proudly, one hand behind their back and the other hovering over their chest. "I'm delighted that the meal was to your liking."

With the day's work finished, most people stayed and chatted happily, some helping Francois finish more batches of bread. Once the sun finally set, most turned in for the night, and Y/n decided she would spend the next few nights in the village. She would leave the morning after she confessed to Senku, just in case space between them was needed.

She climbed the ladder of the observatory, feeling sentimental upon seeing the small room she had once lived in. She missed it a bit. Going to the shelves with her old bedding, she laid it out and got comfortable. Soon enough, she heard the door open again, Senku entered with a small basket of bread in hand.

"I brought some snacks," he grinned, setting the basket beside her. Though she normally didn't like eating near her bed, she figured it was fine as long as she cleaned up after. She happily grabbed one of the luxurious pastries that Ryusui had desired for so long, Senku cheerfully sitting down beside her after opening the roof of the observatory, letting them sleep under the stars on this clear night.

The two of them enjoyed the bread in silence for a while, both relishing the company of each other. Y/n couldn't be more content, and while it might've been the last time in a while that she had an instant like this, she didn't worry or fret. For the first time in a long time she just... enjoyed his company.
