He accepted my offer and brought the crystal rim to his pale lips, sipping with caution at first. The light purple liquid wet his top lip as the combination of flavors mingled on his tongue.
"You do have nice taste," he concluded while gently setting the glass down with the handle pinched between his fingers. "It tells me a lot about who you are. Now finish up and let's get going."
Loid held his hand out as I took it in my own, finishing my cocktail and exiting my seat. Soon enough, his arm was snugly wrapped around my waist as we left the restaurant.
It was a pity to leave that gorgeous view overlooking the city. As we walked down the stairs back to the main lobby and out the door, the feeling of being so small was beginning to turn into the remnant of a past thought.
When we faced the cool air once again, I reckoned we felt the same emotion. There's some chaotic yet relieving feeling associated with breaking character and being yourself again. Sometimes you get so immersed in your role that coming back to reality feels very foreign.
"Agent Twilight, I'm pleased to be accompanying you. May I ask, is this a side mission you were alluding to?"
His left hand reached into the pocket of his trench coat once he approached his car. I did not see his vehicle until he unlocked it, causing a glossy black car to flash its lights shortly ahead of us.
"I'm not entirely sure myself," he admitted. "I will be on a call with my informant, Franky, once we're on the road. He'll give us the synopsis. I get the feeling that you two might get along, Agent Hecate."
"Heh?" I questioned, letting him open the passenger car door. "Why do you say that?"
"Well," he said as I stepped into the car. "You two are a pain in the ass. But, unfortunately, you're helpful to have around."
Before I could retort, he shut the car door and walked towards the driver's side.
Pain in the ass? How could I be a pain in the ass already? We met, like, fifteen minutes ago.
The car door opened as he too got comfortable in his own seat. He rushed to start the engine, wasting no time as the importance of the side mission was unknown. He seemed to get an idea of where he was headed, but no sense of why.
He multitasked between finding Franky's contact in his contact book and navigating the dark roads. Soon enough, he found his phone number and the sound of the line ringing echoed through the car speakers.
"Aw, I wish you caught me at a different time! I was just about to start watching this show with the little one."
"Franky, cut the shit." He bit. "What am I doing right now? ETA six minutes."
"Ah, okay okay. You know, maybe if you were nicer to me then I'd be less reluctant to tell you your task—" He teased, dragging out the last vowel like a yawn.
"Franky."
"Okay fine! Here's the deal. You will be infiltrating an abandoned warehouse where you'll find six men playing a game of roulette. One of them is named Isaac Durham; he goes by Kane, and he's a money launderer under the guise of a political influencer—specifically, that of Donovan Desmond and their party."
Loid and I looked at each other briefly with a sense of worry—no, anticipation— as we waited to be given an order by Franky.
"Consequently, ya know, there are two parts to this. The first is to intercept the jewelry he acquired through a deal with some low-lives that stole from a foreign museum. It's worth well over seven figures in USD. The second part, is not only to take out everyone there, but find a way to interrogate Durham. Who knows, maybe the American chick you're working with could help you... I don't know... sort the jewelry? Can women do that?"
