WHEN WE LOVED

when we loved, it was you i thought the world of, and you i wrote of.

to your thoughts i inclined, so i fell for your mind and the soul underlying.

you gave me your soul the color of coal; i treated it like it was whole.

you held your darkness in your hands, i understand, i was part of your plan.

i loved you i loved you from afar, yelling at stars and in arms a guitar.

away we would go from life and its woe to a niche where time passed slow.

but time dragged its feet to lengthen the weeks we couldn't meet.

words bridged the space, not seeing your face, only seeing each other in that place.

and then you left, too much unsaid, i won't deny my poor eyes bled.

time was too long, reasons were wrong, and it was too late to play along.

the soul we exchanged i can't rearrange; it feels so very strange.

my sweet unrest is better at best if i forget your wound in my chest.

what happened was right but the ending not quite, i'd give anything to rewrite.
