It all ended with one word. One word, that's all it took.
Theo didn't even see it coming. Around 40 minutes ago, Theo was having a calm evening with the rest of his family at a small park near his home. Now, he was on the run, hiding and fleeing from all government personnel.
As Theo ran, his bloodsoaked button up stuck to him, the memory of who's blood he carried on his shirt sending an unwelcome cold shiver down his spine.
Still in shock from the traumatic events of this evening, Theo found it hard to concentrate on his surroundings, heart pounding so loud he could barely hear himself think.
Theo didn't know where he was going exactly, but as he ran, ran away, away from all his troubles and all his worries, it began to rain. It was light at first, but as Theo continued on his way, it got heavier and heavier, winds now blowing so hard he was having a hard time staying on his own two feet.
Slowing down to a fast paced walk as he battled the roaring winds and the whiplash of the heavy rain, Theo began feeling the effects of his journey. Theo felt his muscles aching, pain hitting him at full force with every step he took. Every breath that came from his trembling cold lips sent waves of pain pounding in the back of his skull.
Fighting through the pain, Theo continued down the highway.
Soon, a lone minivan came into view. As the bright lights from the vehicle grew nearer, Theo started rethinking his decision to be on the highway.
Worried that the individuals in the van would recognise him from the News, Theo began his descent down the hill, away from the highway.
Making sure he was far enough from the road, Theo continued his endless run, ignoring the pain as he followed a small stream he'd found.
After what seemed like hours, Theo finally came across a small farm. Night had fallen, and the rain had calmed to a light drizzle. 'Finally, shelter' he thought, jumping the electric fence, making sure not to touch the wire. Soaking wet and exhausted from his journey, Theo made his way to the back of the barn. Not wanting to alert the owners of the farm, Theo tested the barn doors, making sure not to make so much as a sound. And sure enough, it was unlocked.
A low groan came from the barn doors as Theo slipped inside, closing the doors behind him.
The interior of the barn was bigger than Theo had expected. He'd always lived in the big city, and never really been to a farm before.
Apart from a dim light from the moon that made it's way through the dusty windows, Theo was almost blind where he stood.
Unable to see much more than a few feet in front of him, Theo found found a couple of haystacks in the corner on his right, not far from the doors, along with some sheets. He also found some wire going across some of the barns foundations after almost walking into it.
Hanging up his bloody, rain soaked shirt, Theo found himself lost in thought. The screams, the blood, all of it a blur. And all of it his fault.
Shoving the thoughts into the back of his mind, Theo drifted off into a restless sleep.
