1:42 am

As I rose from my bed, I sighed. I couldn't fall asleep. I carefully close my bedroom door so as not to wake Maya. I put on my crocs and put my green Kobes in my bag before heading out the door.

"Hi, Ms. Landon," I greet the elderly nurse.

"Hey, sweetie, don't stay up too late," she said as she pointed to my orange ball.

"I won't," I said, smiling.

"Mhm ok, you know what room to go in."

I thanked her and took the elevator to the third floor. I slowly opened the door and saw my mother sleeping peacefully.

My mother's eyes gradually opened.

"Oh, I'm sorry I didn't mean to wake you up." I quickly close the door.

"You always have a ball in your hands," she said sleepily.

"The doctor said there's a new medicine that can help you," I noted.

"How is your father?" She laughs as she dismisses the subject.

She always has a smile on her face.

"I don't know?" I said scrunching my face.

"Girl, fix your face, didn't I tell you to go talk to him?" She said firmly

"Why should I go speak with him?" He's the one who abandoned us." I almost yelled.

"Lower your tone, just because I'm strapped here doesn't mean I can't beat your ass."

'Yes, it does' I said to myself.

"He hasn't paid you a visit since you were admitted," I murmured.

"He's still your father; respect him," she said. I groan, afraid to lash out at my mother.

"How are you doing?" she sighed, grabbing my hand.

"I'm okay, we won our game yesterday." I smiled remembering him.

"That's my girl," she said with a smile.

"Any boys?" she questioned.

"No, Mom." I groaned.

"Why? It looks like you need one." She said as she threw shade.

"Bye Mom, I'll talk to you later," I kissed her on the cheek and exited the hospital quickly to avoid any further questions.

When I got to my front door, I patted my pockets for my key, but it was nowhere to be found. "There's no way I left my key," I grumbled.

I banged on the door but I know Maya is a heavy sleeper. I decided to go to the gym since the coach gave me a spare key. It wasn't a long walk. I opened the door and shut it quickly so no one could enter.

I turned to watch a bare-chested person shoot a three.

"Yo, this place is closed," the voice said as it came closer.

The voice was familiar to me. I noticed him when I looked up.

"Oh, I didn't realize it was you," he said with a smile.

My gaze follows his sweaty body down to his abs.

"Yo, you good?" he questioned.

I had been staring for far too long.

Again.

I made an awkward laugh. "Yeah."

"How did you get into this place?" He wondered.
