Finn pov

Lydia has been homeschooled for 2 months now. It's interesting to say the least. I payed for a tutor to come to the house because when I tried to teach her I think she lost brain cells. She wanted to keep her ballet lessons. So instead of languages which is what children in school take, she dances. I figured lyd already knows enough languages to drop the subject. It's hard work getting her out of bed in the morning and I often find myself calling the tutor saying don't bother and pretending she's ill. It's just those god damn puppy eyes work so easily.

We got her blood tests results back and they weren't great but weren't terrible. Lydia got gravely ill at the age of 2 because she played out in the rain. And then the cold weather of winter brings it back so throughout all of winter, she has to take regular medicine prescribed by the doctor. Its fascinating to see how she seems to get bursts of energy when running away from the medicine. I have the chase her every morning just to give it to her.

"DADDY!" I heard a scream as i was walking up the stairs to wake lyd up. Clearly she was alright awake. I ran into my room where i had left her to sleep and she was sat on the bed in floods of tears

"Hey hey! Ssshhhh. What's wrong baby?" I asked stroking her hair and holding her close to my chest

"There's a monster under the bed" she cried. I breathed our a sigh of relief that she wasn't seriously hurt and this was just a childhood worry. But I had to pretend to be worried

"Oh no. We can't have you sleeping in the same room as a monster can we?" I said. She shook her head

"Well it's a good thing I have monster repellent spray" I said looking at her

"Really?" She asked. Oh ye. You wait here and I'll go get it

"No daddy don't go" she yelled

"I'll be 2 seconds. But first, I need to know, what does the monster look like?" I asked

"Why?" She asked wiping her tears

"Well I can't use hairy monster repellent if the monster hasn't got hair. You're supposed to me smart" I said smiling trying not to laugh

"Good point. I don't know. You better check" she said

"Alright. But if I get eaten im blaming you" i warned pointing my finger at her

"I'm willing to take that chance" she said with a quivering lip. I got down on the floor and looked under the bed. I let out a fake gasp and jumped back up.

"You weren't wrong. There is a monster. But I have just the repellent needed. The monster was fury with horns. So I need that certain spray" I said running off to leave the room. I ran into the bathroom and emptied a clear spray bottle before filling it up with water from the table. I went back into the room and sprayed the water in the air

"No the monster will dissolved if we ignore it" I told her

"Promise?" She asked

"Have I ever given you a reason not to trust me?" She shook her head and reached her arms out to me. I lifted her up and went to get her dressed. It was Saturday so she didn't have school today. I however had to go down to the betting den. I lifted her up and we drove to the betting den

"Hi" she said as she ran in and sat on Aunt pols knee

"Moring lyd" everyone greeted

"Morning finn. How are you today? Oh I'm not bad. How are you?" Daddy mocked because no one greeted him

"Don't be a baby" uncle John said ruffling his hair. Everyone sat down and started working.

"Can I write a letter?" I asked

"Sure. Who to?" Aunt pol asked getting me some paper

"Gaston Doumergue. I have a few complaints about his government" I said starting to write my letter. I felt many eyes face me and stare into my soul

"Who?" Uncle Arthur asked

"President of France. He's begging to get on my nerves and he ignored my last letter" I said

"You've written to him before?" Uncle Tommy asked

"Many times. He normally replies within days but he keeps ignoring me" I complained

"Right.....erm.....sure" daddy said getting back to work

"So what you complaining about?" Uncle Tommy asked

"Since he became president, France is nearly always at a state of political instability. Also he didn't send me a Christmas card which he does every year and I feel a little offended" I explained

"Not even gonna ask" Uncle john said chuckling. Everyone was quiet working whilst I wrote my letter. When everyone had finished work, it had been hours and I had written 15 pages complaining to Gaston.

"Wow. You really don't like him Uncle Arthur said looking at everything I'd written

"That's where you're wrong. He's a lovely man. Always gives me chocolate and home baked cookies when I visit his home. I just think that a lovely man doesn't always make a lovely president. He has no idea over political needs in France and who the fuck ignores a child!" I yelled a little too loud.

"Lydia Rose! Watch your language" aunt pol scolded

"Sorry. But I just don't think his presidency is a good idea" I told her

"OK. Let's go home before you become president yourself" daddy said lifting me up

"I should be president" I said

"You'd do a better job than any current politicians" Uncle Arthur said

"Although im not French. So I can't do that. Maybe I could be prime minister" I suggested

"And I would be very proud" daddy said kissing my cheek as we walked to the car

"We're going yours for a drink finn" Uncle john said

"Sure. Not like you were invited or anything..." Daddy said trialing off. We drove back and everyone ended up drinking until the night. At 9 o'clock, I needed to go bed

"Daddy, can you spray extra monster repellant. Just in case" I said to daddy

"Monster repellent?" Aunt pol said

"Don't ask" daddy huffed. He lifted me onto his hip and walked upstairs with me. He sprayed the room and lay me in his bed

"I'll be up in a few hours love. Goodnight" he said kissing my cheek and tucking me in. He switched the light off and left the room. After half an hour I decided I'd had enough. I was terrified all alone and I couldn't just lay here and do nothing. So I did the bravest thing I could think of. I ran downstairs and told daddy

"Daddy. I'm not staying up there anymore. The monster repellant isn't working" I said trying not to cry. Daddy put me on his lap and i snuggled into him. Soon enough, I had fallen asleep

When Lydia fell asleep, I turned to face my family

"So, monster repellant?" John asked

"Ugh. Just water in a spray bottle. She thinks there are monsters under the bed" I explained

"OK. And why didn't you just say there are non after checking?" John asked. I thought about it for a minute and realised he was right

"Fuck" i swore annoyed. Everyone left after another couple hours so I went upstairs and got dressed. I put Lydia on my chest and pulled the covers up. She stared slightly but settled down again. Within seconds I was sleeping in my bed, with my daughter near me so I could protect her.

The world is full of monsters. Just not the ones that you find under a bed. These ones are found in the shadows at night, or round the corners on a walk. Normally in groups but sometimes alone. Monsters are everywhere. And it's my duty to protect Lydia from that world. Even if that means taking bedtime monsters as seriously as the monsters that are outside the house
