After getting ready I skipped breakfast and went straight to the infirmary, sat down and waited. And waited. Tina was already ten minutes late to the scheduled time. Hopefully nothing had happened...
I fell asleep while waiting, but the agreed knocking pattern woke me up. "Shit, that was close.", Tina said and entered the room. "Are you sure nobody saw you?", I asked after closing the door.
"Yeah, nobody did.", Tina assured me and then added, "I'm late because Negan wanted to talk to me." "Oh shit. Is everything alright?", I said. "Yeah, he was asking me if I was sure about the marriage thing."
"What did you say?", I asked unsettlingly. "I said I was.", Tina said and grimaced, "Are you ready for this?" "Are you?", I asked and handed her a glass of water, "I put some salt in it, it's gonna make you puke your guts out."
"Then cheers.", Tina said and emptied it in one go. Now my worries really started to kick in. The plan was not that well designed and we were naive for thinking it would work. But there was no turning back now.
"Okay, it's starting.", she said warningly. I had to hold my nose because her puke smelled disgusting. But it was important that it looked real, so they'd leave her alone in her room. No one wanted to watch that. "Are you okay? I mean, despite that.", I asked.
"Yeah.", Tina gasped. "Go get him. He has to see me in order to believe it. Go." Another positive aspect after yesterday's action is that I had gained a little bit more self-confidence.
I didn't shiver or panic at all when I knocked at the meeting room Negan was in. Dwight, Simon and Laura were the only other ones that were present. "It's about Tina.", I said truthfully.
"She has a fit of faintness. I think it's normal for diabetics, nothing I can't treat, but you might want to talk to her." "She at the infirmary?", Negan wanted to know. I nodded. "I guess someone's excited to get married.", he grinned, but got up.
"Hey, why don't you get her something that helps in the meantime, the Doc said shit like dextrose helps quickly.", Negan said to me before closing the door behind him.
Shit. That wasn't part of the plan. I was supposed to keep my distance from Tina from now on. "I'll come with you.", Dwight said quickly and got up too. We were too scared to talk loudly as we walked to the stock.
"Is everything still going according to plan?", I said, hardly noticeable. "Yes.", Dwight whispered back. "I have an escape route. Will he believe her?" "Yeah, she's currently puking her soul out. It's horrible. Thank god Negan doesn't know that much about diabetes."
"Or people.", Dwight added. I chuckled. We were so distracted that we didn't notice who we were running into. It was the last person I wanted to run into right now, actually. Negan.
"Has something happened?", I asked. "Nope.", he answered. "I brought her to her room, she said she was tired." "Yeah, that's normal. I'll give her some dextrose, it's gonna get her on her feet again. And I think I'll ask Doctor Carson to check on her, just to make sure."
"Did I talk too much?", I asked Dwight uncertainty after Negan left. "Don't worry, it's alright. But this is my cue, Tina is probably leaving right now, I have to get Sherry."
He paused and said, "Thank you for your help. Seriously." "You didn't even escape yet." "Still." "Thank me when the plan worked.", I said. "I'll try to buy you some time."
I took some dextrose and registered my number in the list. 413.
On my way back to Tina's room I prayed that she was already gone. I walked as slowly as I could, but not in a way the others would suspect that I was stalling time.
Because no matter how this turned out, I didn't want to be suspected. I would lose my place here, or worse, I'd lose my life. But was my life worth more than the freedom of three innocent people?
I opened the door to Tina's room without knocking. Nobody saw me but I still closed the door, sat on her empty bed and paused for a moment. What now? Tanya and Frankie told me to pretend to go after them so it wouldn't look like I helped them.
And now that I went into her room there was no way I could leave it without a Savior noticing and asking about Tina. "Okay, Nova, think.", I quietly said to myself. "What would you do if you actually didn't know where she was?"
From the outside, Tina looked like a nice but quiet woman, not like Arat, for example. She'd have the guts to leave this place too, if she wanted to. She was a bad bitch. A bitch, but a bad bitch.
But people were underestimating Tina too. She was determined and strong, the very fact that she was still fighting her diabetes in all this proved that she was tougher than everybody thought she was.
I wanted to be like that too. Maybe I already was? In any case, I had to be "badass", as Negan would call it, like right now. "Tina?", I said so loud that probably everyone in the corridor could hear it.
I made my way out of her room and walked down the hallway, waiting for something to happen. Without really noticing, my legs carried me to Negan's room. I knew that he couldn't be in it, since Kourtney had the honor to clean it.
Kourtney. I needed her company now. Even though I couldn't tell her about anything. As the only person from my past, she was therefore also the only person I wanted to see right now.
I hesitated. Should I knock or go in right away? It seemed as if a part of me still believed he could be in there. Ah, fuck it, I thought as I knocked. If he was in there, I'd just ask him if he knew where Tina was.
I held my breath as the door opened. It was Kourtney. "Oh, thank god. I want to talk to you.", I said and squeezed past her. "Here?", she asked. "Yeah, here.", I repeated and closed the door behind me.
Inside Negan's room I realized, I didn't know where to sit down. I had been here before, but that day he was offering me a seat. It felt weird to plant my ass somewhere here so I just sat on the floor and shut the door with my back.
I looked around. The whole place was shining. "So. You're cleaning the boss's room." Kourtney shrugged. "Yeah. I thought about quitting but then I realized I'd end up as a biter in the cage down there.", she said and pointed at the window behind her.
"So you still want to leave?", I asked suddenly. Kourtney looked at me surprisedly. "Of course. I told you. Why are you asking?" I hesitated. "Perhaps it isn't such a bad idea."
She stopped mopping the floor. "Oh no. Nova, what did you do?"
"I- I screwed up. Running just doesn't seem like such a bad idea now.", I added.
"Okay. Uhm-", Kourtney seemed to panic. "When do we leave?" "Now.", I said.
"Okay. Okay.", Kourtney repeated to calm herself down. "It's gonna be alright.", I said. "If we-" My words got interrupted by the sound of wood and barbed wire knocking against the door.
This was the end. What should we do? The knock repeated. "I know you're in there. And the only reason I'm knocking is because I'm polite. The door is open.", Negan's voice sounded.
