It’s been two weeks now since mom and the others came back for a short break. I’ve never seen her this upset before. When I came downstairs, she hugged me as if she had been gone for years.
I mean her missions usually are shorter but that still doesn’t explain it.
She assured me everything was fine but I couldn’t shake the feeling that something happened on that mission.

That night she stayed in my room and we shared the bed.
Luckily, it’s big enough to fit two people comfortably. She held me tight that night and showed me even more affection than usually.
I don’t know how many times she told me that night that she is so happy that she had me and that I could grew up in a save environment.
I’m glad about that too but it still made me curious what brought this thought up in her head and made it stuck in there.

I asked her because there’s no way I would have found an answer to this question on my own.
After she kept quiet for a few seconds she looked me in the eyes and told me that it’s confidential what she’s about to tell me and that I am not allowed to tell anyone.
I promised her to keep it to myself and with a sigh she told me about that witch that fought against them and messed with their minds, put visions in them that were supposed to break them.
She only briefly told me that hers was about the Red Room and me.

It still confuses me because I never had contact with the Red Room nor do I know anything about it, except that it trains young women to be assassins and that they have a ‘graduation ceremony’.
Mom always said she would tell me more about it eventually, when she was ready to talk about it and when I was old enough to understand what happens there.
I respected that and never pushed her to talk about it because I know it was a traumatic time for her but that night, I wondered what happened to her there and in what connection I was to all of that in her vision.

Now, two weeks later I still haven’t figured it out but I let it go after a few days because it’s not my business, snooping around my moms past.
I focused on helping aunt Laura, my school work and Cooper and Lila.
It's not like those two weeks felt especially long but some nights weren’t easy.
Seeing my mom this upset made me worry about this mission even more. Even though she seemed calmer and more put together when they left after a few days, I still was worried.
What if it was even worse this time? What else was that witch able to do?

My mom's calls calmed me down when she sounded normal over the phone and seemed to be fine.

I’m in the living room, cleaning up the mess Lila and I made when we build a pillow castle while the news are on. Laura watches them from the kitchen while preparing dinner.
I don’t really listen because most of the time I’m just not interested but something makes me look up.
They mentioned a halfway familiar name. “Ultron” or something like that.
I overheard mom and the others talk about him when they were here.
They didn’t know I was eavesdropping, well actually I didn’t eavesdrop, I just had to use the bathroom and overheard them talking about him.

The news show some pictures of a city in south corea where some accidents were and some buildings were damaged because of the fight against a certain Ultron.
There aren’t pictures of the fighting or Ultron but I’m sure that my mom was involved in this and seeing those pictures, doesn’t calm me down.
“They will be fine.”
I didn’t notice how Laura came up to me and now lays a hand on my shoulder. Her eyes are on the TV but her words are directed at me.
“They know how to fight and protect each other. Clint would never let anything happen to your mom and your mom would protect Clint at all costs. They are fine, no need to worry.”

Her words aren’t just supposed to calm me down but her as well.
We stay silent as we watch the moderator introducing a different topic.
Laura goes back to the kitchen in silence, giving me the space I need to sort my thoughts.

That night, after dinner and after we put the younger ones to bed, I sit in my room and stare at my phone, waiting for mom to call.
She doesn’t call every night but she tries every second or at least third night. The calls don’t have to be long, just a minute would be enough, just so I know that she is doing fine.
The last call was two days ago so she should call this night.

I watch my phone lay there in silence, waiting for it to go of but it doesn’t. Times goes by slow and at some point I notice aunt Laura standing in my doorframe, watching me.
“Maybe she forgot?” The words come out silently and I swallow hard, feeling like my throat is a little raspy.
“Probably.” Aunt Lauras voice sounds optimistic and she holds out her hand for me.
“Wanna lay with me tonight?”
I look between her and my phone and slowly nod, standing up, grabbing my phone and taking her hand.

I let her lead me to her bedroom and lay down next to her, putting my phone on the night stand.
“She will call as soon as it’s possible. They probably have a lot to discuss right now and she will call you tomorrow or the day after that when everything has calm down a little. Don’t worry, she is fine.”
Laura reassures me and I chew my bottom lip, slowly nodding and doing my best to believe her words.

I have trouble falling asleep and turn around, looking at my phone in the dark, hoping it will light up and announce a message but it doesn’t.
As an almost 17-year-old teenager, I probably shouldn’t be this attached to my mom but I have no other family than her and even though I love Laura, Clint and the kids, they still aren’t my mom.
She is my safe place and my home and I’m scared that something happened to her on this mission.
I don’t know what I would do without her.
