Chapter 2

Whiteout

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A broken scream
From a broken will
Not one you'll hear
From a broken soul
Ignus felt like he could throw up at any moment. He was in the passenger seat of a four-seater car and Petra was in the driver's seat. Ignus was dressed in a white winter suit with a hood coated with fur and tinted blue gloves, with matching boots. They were driving across a deserted road in the middle of a forest with harsh snow littering the place.
"And like I said, the meeting is happening on a train, and even for an assassin as gifted as White Eye is, there is only one very convenient spot where he can get a clean shot off, and you'll be lying in wait, you got all that?" Petra asked while raising her voice over the loud crunching of snow beneath the car tires.
"Yeah, but why is a train going to be running in all this snow? Shouldn't that be a safety concern?"
"The train is equipped with snow ploughs, and focus on the mission. The other members of the Service will handle the basics such as bodyguard security and whatnot. And you'll be handling your part."
As Petra said that, she stopped the car to a halt which shocked the already freezing Ignus and opened the door.
"See that edge of the mountain there? No you don't, but keep moving in this direction-" Petra pointed towards the forest. "-and you should find it there. Get a hiding spot and wait for your target to arrive, and if things go wrong meet me back here. I'll be handling radio interceptions from here."
"Right. So you get to laze around in the car while I go face off a deadly murderer."
"If you have time to chat, you have time to setup. Go!"
Ignus sighed as he went on his journey. He wasn't bringing much, just a pistol and a knife along with a spare mag just in case. He didn't want to cut down on his own mobility by bringing a backpack. Putting the earpiece in that he was given earlier, he now had a way to communicate with Petra in case she had anything important to say. Not that Ignus expected that to happen, but it was going to be handy if something went wrong. After what felt like an hour of trudging through the snow, Ignus found the edge of the mountain that Petra had mentioned earlier. Looking into the distance, Ignus saw train tracks being briefly exposed in the large gap between the two mountains that it tunneled under. This would be an impossible shot to hit, considering it is a moving train after all and the wind conditions, but Ignus wasn't going to underestimate a member of The Eye.
After getting some distance between himself and the edge, Ignus lied down and began covering himself up in snow. In the back of his mind, he wondered if he should have brought a compass incase he got lost in the forest, but he put that thought in the back of his mind, and he started the wait in the freezing cold.
...
It was torture. Lying down inside of a coat of snow he covered himself in an effort to make makeshift camouflage while waiting for an assassin that seems like he would never come. Ignus seriously considered the possibility of standing up to get a quick stretch, but he wasn't going to risk it.
"Ignus, heads up. We got a tip of a car that had parked somewhere close about 15 minutes ago, so keep your head down."
"Copy." Ignus replied in a hushed voice.
