How To Write The Alphabet : Part 3/5

Characters covered :

Answers to the extra practice from the last lesson!

Q: What is the name of the character ㅁ?

A: Mi-eum/미음

Q: What sound does the character ㅂ make?

A: 'b'

Q: Write the character ㄹ or explain your stroke orders.

A: Answer may vary. (I say anything is correct as long as it's readable and not backwards or written from bottom->up)

ㅅ is our 7th letter in the alphabet! To say its name, you say shi (please try not to say it like a cuss word. Make the 'i' part lighter. Your lips shouldn't move too much!) and ot. It's not pronounced like the end of parking lot. The 'o' is long, so try saying 'oh'. When you reach the end of 'oh', cut it right off with a t. Your lips should not have moved at all by the time you reach 't'.

ㅅ also makes the sound 's' or 'sh' so try saying 's'. Similar to the noise a snake makes when it hisses. ㅅ is a 't' sound when it's a batchim.

Additionally, we don't say 'si-ot' when we say its name because that 'si' becomes a 'shi' when it's with a certain vowel. We'll get to that later.

Sound : 's'
Name : 시옷 (shi-ot)

ㅅSound : 's'Name : 시옷 (shi-ot)

This one's just two strokes. There's nothing much I want to say about the character, but I need to address something-not just this character-so I'll do it at the end of this unit as we wrap it up.

Next one can kind of mess with you a little. It's actually silent. 'Silent'. How? When it's in front of a vowel and NOT A BATCHIM, it doesn't make any noise. If it IS A BATCHIM, it makes an 'ng' noise. This will make more sense when we get to the batchims.

Sound : Silent/'-ng'
Name : 이응 (ie-eung)

Just know it's a circle and that it's silent for now

Just know it's a circle and that it's silent for now.

Write it about three times and know the name of the character.

I purposefully grouped the next two TOGETHER.
ㅈ and ㅊ.
I thought I needed to address this. This relates to what I said earlier, under the picture of ㅅ.
In Korea, most of us do not write it the standard way. When you write 'a', do you write it the way it's typed or the 'normal' way? Some of you might, but I guarantee most of you probably don't. In Korea, we've kind of redid the way they're drawn. You can see that the keyboards type it the standard way at the bottom. They both make similar noises when they're a batchim.

Sound : 'j'
Name : 지읒 (Ji-eut)
(Character in the right of the picture)

Sound : 'ch'
Name : 치읓 (chi-eut)
(Character on the left of the picture)

ㅊSound : 'ch'Name : 치읓 (chi-eut)(Character on the left of the picture)

They're written the same, except one has a stem. Practice this around ten times.

The one on the left makes the noise 'j' as in jacket and the one on the right makes the noise 'ch' as in chew.
