He was still a stranger. Still dangerous.
But something in him didn't match the rest of the Lost Boys. There was a silence in him. A war behind the eyes.
Don't be stupid, I thought, shaking the thoughts from my head. It's not real. This isn't real. It's not some fairytale. You're not some girl falling for the villain's second-in-command.
But still... I looked.
Eventually, we reached a bend in the trail, a place where the trees gave way to stars.
"We should turn around," he said at last, breaking the silence.
"Yeah," I replied softly, my voice still rough.
He hesitated. Then added, "You should really stop picking fights with Pan."
I let out a short, dry laugh. "Are you giving me advice?"
"No," he said quickly, though I caught the ghost of a smile tugging at the corner of his lips. "I'm warning you. Pan doesn't lose. Not with words. Not with anything."
"Right," I said, trying to act unfazed, even though my heart was still aching.
We returned to camp just as the last note of Peter's flute faded into the night. The boys moved in perfect unison, like puppets strung to music I couldn't hear. Something about it was wrong. Too precise. Too mechanical.
And then I saw him.
Henry. Laughing. Dancing.
"Henry?" I breathed.
This wasn't right. This was exactly what Pan had done before. That pipe—it didn't just call people. It changed them.
My chest tightened again, but for an entirely different reason. I stepped forward.
And Peter was suddenly in front of me.
"Where do you think you're going, young lady?" he asked, voice almost amused.
"I was just—"
"Exactly. You were going to do something foolish." He turned, calling out, "Devin!"
A boy stepped forward. Eyes blank.
"Lock her up. We don't want her interfering."
"What?!" I cried, stepping back—but I was already surrounded.
Felix moved forward, reluctantly. His expression was unreadable, but I caught the flash of something in his eyes. Guilt? Resentment?
He didn't speak. Just rolled his eyes as if to say "I warned you."
"Felix," I pleaded as he grabbed my arm, his grip rougher now. "You don't have to do this."
"I do," he said, not looking at me.
They led me through the woods. My wrists ached in Felix's grasp.
"You have no idea what Pan is," I shouted. "He doesn't care about you. About any of you!"
"Shut up," Devin growled. "Pan is our friend. He always does what's right."
"Pan always wins," Felix added flatly, though something about the way he said it didn't sound like faith. It sounded like resignation.
"He's lying to you!" I cried. "He wants Henry for something dark—dangerous! You have to believe me!"
Felix's grip tightened, and he stopped abruptly. "You're delusional," he snapped. "You know nothing about Pan."
"But you do?" I whispered. "Or have you just told yourself he's good for so long, you stopped questioning it?"
His face darkened. "Enough!"
I bit my tongue. I'd pushed too far.
The cages came into view, suspended high above the forest floor like trophies. Felix held me still as Devin opened the iron gate.
"No. No, you can't—" I thrashed. "Felix, please! Don't put me in there."
"It's part of the job description, love," he said, but his voice had lost its bite.
"Please..." My voice cracked. "Look after Henry. I promised I'd protect him."
Felix paused, tying the final knot as the cage rose into the air.
His eyes didn't meet mine.
But just before he turned away, he looked back—face blank, voice cool.
"Well, love..." he said, "You're doing a sucky job at it."
And with that, he walked into the dark.
A/n: Muhahhaha I am pure evil! Isn't this amazing? I am so good at this... (Not really.) Anyways, hope you enjoyed this chapter. Please leave your comments about how I can improve! Bye my beans!
