He helped Henry and me to our feet, and we started running—again. We crashed through brush and shoved aside overgrown branches. I thought I heard footsteps around us. If I was right, the Lost Boys weren't far behind.

Eventually, we stopped in a small clearing, all of us gasping for air.

"I think we lost them," Brownie said, catching his breath.

"Can we rest for a sec?" Henry asked, panting. Brownie nodded, and Henry and I plopped down while Brownie stayed standing.

"You guys seem new," he said. "Did the Shadow bring you here too?"

"No," I replied. "He—" I pointed at Henry, "—was kidnapped by Pan's people. I followed them through a portal, and now we're here."

"I'm sorry," Brownie said sincerely. "If Pan sent for you, he wants you. And if Pan wants you, he will get you."

"Well, no one is taking him," I said firmly. "I promised his mom I'd protect him—and I don't break promises."

I couldn't fail. I mean, how hard could it be to escape this island? My dad did it all the time! Then again... he had a ship and a crew. I had a kid and a dude with brown hair.

"Why does Pan want you?" Henry asked Brownie. Brownie looked down and sighed. He pulled a vial from under his scarf—suspended on a cord around his neck.

"Pixie dust," he said. "I stole it from Pan. I thought it would let me fly away and go home."

Honestly? Not a terrible idea.

"But it doesn't work. It's useless," Brownie added bitterly.

"Don't worry," Henry said. "My family's coming for me—and you can come with us."

"You really think you're the first boy who believed his family would come?" Brownie asked quietly.

"Well..." I started. "His family does care about him. I'm here to protect him, but trust me—they won't stop until he's safe. They'll come."

"Yeah," Henry said. "My family is different. We always find each other."

"You better hope they don't," Brownie warned, "or Pan will rip their shadows into oblivion."

"It's going to be okay," Henry said, ever the optimist. "I promise. All we need is time."

"Is there anywhere we can hide from the Lost Boys?" I asked. "There has to be somewhere on the island."

Brownie hesitated, thinking. "There's one place they can't track us," he said. "The Echo Caves. But they're far."

Before we could ask anything else, we heard rustling from the right. The Lost Boys were closing in.

"To the Echo Caves then?" I asked. We all looked at each other and nodded. Then we were off—again.

~ Short time skip because who wants a full running montage? ~

We reached what looked like a clearing. Suddenly, Henry gasped and stumbled back.

"Watch out!" Brownie shouted, catching his shoulder before he fell.

I looked over the edge and nearly passed out.

"Oh that's just great," I muttered. "A 100-foot drop-off. Classic."

We stood at the cliff's edge, peering into the pit of doom. Then, from behind us, a voice shouted:

"They're over here!"

"Crap," I said. "They're getting closer!" I looked at Brownie.

"Any other way to the Echo Caves?"

"No," he said grimly. "We're done for."

"All that running, just to die at a cliff?" I sighed. "Fantastic."

"I'll give them the pixie dust," Brownie said, clutching the vial. "Maybe they'll spare us."

"You wanna give up?" Henry asked. Honestly, he had a point. I didn't come all this way just to surrender.

"We don't have a choice," Brownie insisted. "They've got us."

"No," Henry said firmly. "It's our way out."

Before anyone could react, he yanked the vial off Brownie's neck.

"What are you doing?" Brownie cried.

"That's an amazing idea!" I said, realization hitting me. I should've thought of that earlier.

Henry stepped back to get a running start.

"Everyone knows pixie dust is for flying!" he shouted.

"It doesn't work!" Brownie argued.

"That's because you have to believe!" Henry grinned. He looked like he'd been waiting for this moment his whole life.

"I definitely do not believe," Brownie said, eyeing the cliff.

"That's okay," Henry said, uncorking the vial. "Because I do."

And just like that, the three of us ran and jumped off the cliff.
