The Promise

Chapter 15

Lamaria and Kaloni walked into the house.

"I really need to do your hair", said Lamaria.

"Ugh. Do we have to?", asked Kaloni.

"Do you want your hair to fall out?", asked Lamaria.

"No", said Kaloni.

"Okay then, I need to wash it", said Lamaria. "I'll do it in a few. Until then, you can play or watch TV"

Kaloni watched to the remote and turned the TV on.

Lamaria went into her purse and took her phone out.

"Mommy?", said Kaloni.

"Yes?", asked Lamaria.

"...why did you kiss Chris and today you kissed daddy?", asked Kaloni.

What Kaloni said, caught Lamaria off guard. She didn't know what to say. She was embarrassed because she didn't even realize Kaloni would be confused about that.

"As much as I wanna explain that baby I can't right now. I'm sorry", said Lamaria.

"...does that mean you and daddy are together again?", asked Kaloni.

Lamaria nods. "Yes", said Lamaria.

Kaloni began watching TV.

Lamaria walked into the kitchen. She began to feel overwhelmed.

She knew nobody was perfect but she didn't want her daughter to look at differently. She was also thinking about Chris and Ryan. She loved Ryan and they had 7 years together and a child, but she also felt a connection with Chris.

Lamaria sat at the table and checked her emails on her phone.

Ryan walked into the house a few minutes later.

"Wheres your mom?", asked Ryan.

"In the kitchen", said Kaloni.

Ryan walked into the kitchen and saw Lamaria typing on her phone.

"Who you texting?", he asked as he took the phone from her hand.

Lamaria made a confused yet mad face.

"What is your problem?", asked Lamaria.

Ryan looked at her phone and saw that she was sending someone an email, so he tossed the phone on the table.

"Okay so now you're throwing my phone? What's up with you?", asked Lamaria.

"You still fucking with Chris?", asked Ryan.

"No", said Lamaria.

"You lying", said Ryan.

"I'm not lying now stop acting like this.", said Lamaria.

"Like what?", asked Ryan. "I'm not stupid, Lamaria. Don't try to make me out to be like I am"

"You're acting different okay. Ever since you came back you've been different.", said Lamaria.

"So what? You don't love me anymore or something?", asked Ryan.

"I do. You know I do. I'm just saying that you're a little different.", Lamaria.

Ryan pulled a chair closer to her and sat down.

"You better not be cheating on me", said Ryan.

Ryan thought that when Chris said he would say something that would hurt Ryan's feelings but he didn't, Ryan thought that he meant that Chris and Lamaria were still fooling around.

"I'm not", said Lamaria.

Ryan looked into her eyes for a moment. He knew Lamaria wasn't a great liar. He tried to see if she was lying but he saw that she wasn't.

"So...what's up with these kisses you've been giving me?", he asked.

"...well Ryan I know that- that you saw me and Chris...so it's just awkward when I see you because I feel like I betrayed you", said Lamaria.

Ryan looked down.

"Is that why you think I'm cheating on you with Chris? Because I haven't been kissing you like I used to? Or did something happen with you and Chris?", asked Lamaria.

"...he told me that y'all were still doing things. He told me that you told him you didnt want to be with me anymore", said Ryan as he looked at her.

Ryan was lying, of course. He said that because he wanted to start giving rid of any feelings for Chris that he felt she had.

"He did? That's not true, Ryan.", said Lamaria.

"I see that now", said Ryan. "I think he's mad about me coming back and mad about you choosing me so he wanted to get under my skin."

"Well he's a liar", said Lamaria.

"I guess he was never a friend...he just trying to find a way to get you this whole time", said Ryan. "That's probably why he didn't try to help me."

"...he said he did", said Lamaria.

"Damn...he's a liar then", said Ryan. "Guess I can never believe anything he has ever said"

Lamaria looked down. She thought about everything her and Chris ever talked about.

"But he doesn't matter. We have us now and that's all that matters", said Ryan. "...and I've been thinking about the whole Kaloni having a sibling thing...we can try but we need to talk to a doctor before trying to get pregnant"

"...well Ryan I don't wanna get pregnant right now. My business is getting really lately.", said Lamaria. "Maybe new year"

Ryan nods.

"I'm going to go get my laptop. Keep an eye on K.K." said Lamaria.

"As always", said Ryan. "Eyes and ears"

Lamaria smiled and walked out of the kitchen.
