I joined the group that Ali was in so we could go to the next game together. I was pretty scared, but I knew I could manage. I had my friends to help if I needed it.
Ali and I arrived in this oversized playground area after walking forever again. There were 4 brightly colored doors with various shapes painted on them. A triangle, a circle, a star, and an umbrella. I thought it was highly unusual for the latter to be in a group of normal-ish shapes, but I didn't think about it for long.
"Players, welcome to the second game. We will begin shortly," the announcer said.
Gi-Hun started theorizing about what potential games we might play. Good strategy, but his ideas seemed highly unlikely. I did wonder what the playground would bring though. I noted that it didn't seem big enough for all of us to be running around playing a game though... far too small for that. We'd all be bumping into each other. This made me thing that we'd probably be sitting down or just generally not running or moving around too much.
"Players, before the second game begins, choose one of the four available shapes you see on the wall. Once you've chosen your shape, please stand in front of it."
"Sang-woo," Gi-Hun spoke. "Got anything?"
"Not yet."
"Choose a shape and stand in front of it immediately," the voice called.
"Should we play this together?" Gi-Hun questioned.
"That could be dangerous. At this point, we don't know anything. I think it would put us at a disadvantage if we just choose one."
"You think?"
"There's this saying in investing. 'Try not to keep all your eggs in the same basket.'"
Gi-Hun then went on to brag about Sang-Woo's accomplishments to the old man. I didn't listen. I was gravitating toward either the star or the triangle. I did love stars, but triangles were the strongest shape found in nature. I decided to go with the triangle. Hopefully nobody else other than one of them wanted triangle.
"Like Sang-Woo told us, let's all split up and take it from there, huh?" Gi-Hun rephrased. "Who should go where?"
"Triangle," I blurted out before I had a chance to stop myself. All of the boys in front turned to me and Ali looked at me from the side. I scratched my head nervously. "Uh... I meant to say that I want triangle. Unless more than one of you guys wanted it."
They all stared at me weirdly, and then Sang-woo turned back ahead.
"I'll go with her."
I looked at 218 and back to Ali. I motioned for him to bend down so I could tell him something.
"Does he think I need protection or something? Because I'm a girl?" I whispered.
Ali pulled away and chuckled.
"Maybe he just thinks that you're smart, Ms. Y/N."
"What about you?" Gi-Hun asked Ali after thinking for a while.
"Dayira," Ali muttered, moving forward and making a clockwise motion with his hand.
"A circle, you mean?" Gi-Hun questioned, mirroring his hand."
"Yeah. It looks just like the moon where I'm from."
"That means we have Star and umbrella..." Gi-Hun looked to the old man.
"You pick first. Go on," player 1 urged, making me laugh. He looked at me and smiled.
"Are you sure?"
"Yes!"
Gi-Hun surveyed his options.
"Then I'm choosin' the umbrella," he said determinedly.
218 then looked at him incredulously and asked if he was sure and why.
"Oh, growing up, I'd always lose my umbrella so my mom would get angry. So then she gave me broken ones to bring to school. I always wanted her to get me one of those good umbrellas like the other kids."
The old man looked disinterested, so Gi-Hun asked if he was okay with the star. Player 1 reassured him that it was okay.
I was ahead of 218 in the line. I could feel his presence very strongly. It was kind of unsettling. I started to rock around on my feet nervously and play with my fingers.
"The time to select your shape has ended. I will now explain the rules of the next game."
The doors opened to show a worker behind each one with small tins on a table in front of them.
"All players, please take one case each from the table at the front of your line."
She repeated what she said and the line moved along. I took mine and said a thank you to the worker.
"Please take a moment to open the case and check the contents."
I opened mine and saw a... cracker? No, it kind of looked like a flat fortune cookie. It had a triangle carved out of it with a needle placed on the object. A lot of people looked regretful and saddened.
"The second game is Dalgona. The shape you have chosen is the shape you must remove from your honeycomb."
My eyes widened. I looked over at Gi-Hun because I knew he chose an umbrella. He had a look on his face. One that looked like he was accepting his fate.
