Birthday

I opened my eyes. The dawn has already appeared outside and the sun was shining in my room.

I stretched, then threw the blanket off myself to get up. My green eyes looked at me tiredly in the mirror. My otherwise dark blonde wavy hair was completely shattered. I quickly grabbed my comb and did my hair with it. When I looked at myself in the mirror I remembered that I was the complete opposite of my sisters in appearance.

Xenia, my sister, who was one year younger than me, was a copy of my mother's head: light-blonde, wavy hair and ice-blue eyes. My sister Jacky, who was two years younger, came after our father: black straight hair and green eyes.

Dad and granny always said I had a lot from his mother and father, my grandmother and my grandfather. My grandmother's dark blonde hair and my grandfather's green eyes, my grandmother said that.

Unfortunately, I never got to know him, even my father had never looked him in the eyes. Grandpa died very early before my dad and aunt were born. I felt sorry for dad, he couldn't even get to know his father. My family doesn't talk about it much, whenever we asked something about him or wanted to know why he died, they suddenly started talking about something completely different. Even if I have never seen my grandpa, I am sad that he is no longer there. I would like to have someone in my family that look a little bit like me. He could only be seen in photos, but these were black and white photos. Ugh, I shouldn't worry too much about it.

Once again I had compared myself with my family for too long that I had completely forgotten that today is my birthday. I noticed also that it was strangely quiet. Weird! Everyone should be awake by now.

I tiptoed down the stairs and was greeted by a load of confetti.

"All the best, honey," my mother called to me.

Surprised, I hugged her.

"All the best, Evie", now Dad, Xenia and Jacky came too. Dad threw me up and caught me again. Xenia hugged me with a giggle and Jacky also clung to me once. I grinned broadly, while I messed up the hair of my little sister, who looked at me indignantly and smoothed it out again.

Mum led us to the table, where pancakes were already waiting for us. We sat down immediately and began to eat. My family was a vegetarian, so there was muesli or jam bread in the morning, for example. On special days like today, pancakes. Of course with no eggs!

In England people actually ate bacon with eggs or something like that for breakfast, but this was not in the case with a vegetarian family.

My sisters don't mind that, we didn't like meat that much anyway. Somehow Mum couldn't take it and when she was little she always vomited after eating meat. So she was very young when she became a vegetarian. When she and Dad got together and moved into this house, he also stopped eating meat. Since Dad worked as a cook and previously only cooked meat dishes, his vegetarian behavior opened up a whole new world of recipes for him, he always said that.

Now he had his own restaurant about ten minutes from home near the Harvey Mall.

"Remus and Lyall will be coming at lunchtime," Dad started the conversation. "My mother is coming too."

My smile got bigger, my godfather would come.

"I hope it is not too stressful for her, she has to go from Bulgaria to England after all," my mother said worriedly.

Right, my father's family came from Bulgaria. My grandma, my aunt, my uncle and two my cousins lived there. This is why my sisters and I were really good in Bulgarian. Mum had to learn it, but now she can do it very well too.

"What about Helena and -" asked Xenia, but was interrupted.

"Unfortunately they cannot come. Juanes is very busy and Jena has a lot to do too, "sighed Dad.

Sad ...

"Is it okay if we don't open the presents until the others are there, Evie?" Mum asked me.

I nodded immediately. "Sure, it's more fun then," I said.

After we had cleared the table, I went upstairs with Xenia and Jacky. There we dressed in something fancier and then went back downstairs.

"Do you know what I just thought of?" Said Xenia and stopped when we were at the end of the stairs.

Jacky and I both shook our heads.

"Grandma, she only comes at Christmas. Why is she coming today and at such short term?" Xenia looked amused by our faces, but still looked serious.

Jacky looked confused from Xenia to me. "How do you always come up with something like that?"

"I don't know," Xenia shrugged her shoulders. "Could you please stop staring at me so strangely, I'm just thinking."

Xenia had always been the one of us who put things together and acted almost like a cop or a detective.

Suddenly we started laughing.

Then the doorbell rang.

"Strange, it's only half past ten", Mum appeared next to us, the beginning of the stairs was right next to the door.

She opened it. There stood our grinning grandma.

"I hope it's okay to be there already," she smiled.

"Granny!"
