Our story is located in the 3000s of earth. Many things have changed, including social standards an politics.
But the most drastic change has happened within the human itsself: You no longer hit puberty at a certain age which has made certain body parts vanish completely. E.g. one will no longer grow beards and breasts. And now that society could no longer tell apart "females" and "males" by simply looking at the body of a person an absolute truth has been acknowledged.
Gender is a construct.
Other than that, after the 3rd World War (2687-2698) a lot of living space has been destroyed so that it has been easier to travel to Mars in order to live there, than staying on earth.
Also, in the 2910s more and more Residents of the new-found cities like "Goydin" and "Theras" have started protests due to the low life standards. They have the opinion that it would have been easier to concentrate on turning the earth back to its original state rather than just sending most humans to Mars.
