The girl who wasn't born with the silver spoon, who had been crazily in love. The girl he had used for amusement. She had trained him all alone. She had done the job of a father and mother for their son.
It was such a shame to him. He had been a horrible father. He had picked some children over another. It was terrible of him.
He could still remember the last time he saw him up close. The day he had come with his mother in need of financial assistance. Those words he said that day began to play in his head and it brought nothing but regret, and shame to him.
He couldn't believe he had been so cruel and he was just realizing it.
"You have... Every right.. to hate me. I know I wrong you so much... and.. and... I want you to know that I am so sorry." He burst into fresh tears, crying.
How he wished he could turn back time to correct those mistakes he had made.
"Dem... Demilade. Oluwademilade... I don't have any right to call you.... son." He shook his head miserably. "I'm very sorry. I am truly sorry for what I did. I am."
Demilade was quiet. He stared at his fingers that were intertwined in front of him. He can not even pinpoint what exactly he was feeling from the different emotions crossing through him at that moment.
"Your tears and pleading don't change anything, you know? It doesn't justify what you did, you know that right?" Demilade asked with a hoarse tone glancing at him.
The man bowed his head in shame, nodding.
"I know... and I am sorry. Please Demilade... I know... "He cried. "I have been a horrible father. I've wronged you....so much. I know that... and I am sorry.... please son... please forgive me. I am so sorry for all the pain I had cost you and your mother. I am sorry." He pleaded, profusely.
"Why did you hate me in the first place?" Demilade asked. His eyes were still glued on his intertwined fingers. It was so hard for him to look the man in the eyes. He hated looking at him even on Television. But he was currently sitting with him in the same room. It was something that two weeks ago, he wouldn't think of doing. It wouldn't even cross his mind.
But here he was, sitting with the man whose name he hated more than anything. The man that had left and abandoned his responsibility. The same man who caused his mother pain.
He was finding it hard to contain his own emotions. The memories of all that he had done, all those things he knew he did were coming back, drowning him in them.
He closed his eyes for some seconds and shook his head like it was going to make those memories disappear and ease the pain he was feeling.
"Oluwademilade..." The man's voice woke him from his thought. He sounded distant and regretful.
"Why did you hate me so much? Did you really hate my mother so that you couldn't even look me in the eyes? What exactly was her sin that make you do all that you did to her? Was she so worthless to you? Why did you hate my mother so much and decided to cause her all those pain?" He asked bitterly. He sniffled and tapped his feet on the ground.
Mr. Lawrence was lost for words at his questions. He couldn't even come up with an excuse. He could only mutter his name as he cried shamefully.
"Demmy..."
Demilade continued. "Considering the fact that you don't like my mother and she was just a game of amusement. What about me?" He gave him a look for a brief second. He was just staring at him, crying like a kid. He looked away from him. "Was I a threat to your family or I wasn't worthy of being your son since I came from a woman who had a family with no name? Why? Why did you hate us so much?" The back of his eyes was burning with hot tears and he was fighting the urge not to tear up. He believes he was stronger than that.
