I walk a lonely road

He suffers from spina bifida and walks with the help of a gait coach, so I know he doesn't have the long and tortuous natural walking endurance that I did when I was a kid. And I realized that the "walking" part of natural walking is really inappropriate. I am a journalist for a magazine, and one of my historical missions required me to walk through a local nature reserve under the guidance of a guide.
But recently I learned that you don't have to go deep into the forest or walk far to make amazing discoveries, and you don't have to spend hours in the forest. Tree walks and nature trails are great ways to get in touch with the environment. In Delhi, tree walks and nature trails are becoming more and more popular, and city dwellers are eager to experience the natural environment. Although nature can promote better health, creativity and even kindness, trees may also have something special.
Research shows that experience in nature helps us feel kinder towards others, and a lot of this research has to do with trees. In another study, researchers found that people were more willing to help those who lost their gloves if they had just walked in a park with trees than if they were at the entrance to the park. While it may be that these health benefits are less related to trees than to natural spaces in general, New Yorkers who live near trees report better overall health than residents who live near green and grassy places.
But for a small plot, there is a huge variety of trees to enjoy. The nearly 24,000 acres of mostly woodland offer kilometers of hiking trails, lovely spring wildflowers and of course plenty of trees. The relief is varied with meadows, streams and forests, home to birds, small mammals and many different species of native plants and trees.
Cobbled paths wind around the main house, garden and other structures, while nature trails lead to a lush boardwalk with stunning views of Long Island Sound. A self-guided walking trail takes you around campus to see foliage, gardening, and historic buildings.
There are guided nature walks in the reserve, or you can grab a trail map and find your own path. If you have a trail nearby, this can be a natural playground and a source of information and inspiration. Children can explore the woodland by looking through branches, beyond tree trunks, and under piles of leaves on the ground.
Every walk is an opportunity for children to familiarize themselves with the natural world. It might take an hour to walk around the block with my son when he was 2 years old, because there is always something new to explore. Walk at different times during the day and night to increase your chances of seeing new things.
When walking, or even while viewing or going outside, use a magnifying glass to take a close look at raindrops hanging from a leaf or to study the structure of snow. Bring an inexpensive magnifying glass with you so kids can get to know nature better. Watch birds from live "cameras", a virtual window into the natural world of birds. Tell your child what these animals are doing.
