Bill Sweeney then told the whole congregation that it didn't matter who you loved. He said that it was perfectly natural, and that God loved us unconditionally.
When my father started to speak in protest, Bill immediately cut him off.
"Paul, I can't believe that you still refuse to get a clue. I mean, after all that we've been through.."
"What do you mean all that we've been through?"
Bill walked over to him and took his hands in his. He shook his head and said, "I'm talking you and me- in the summer of '83!"
Apart from a few gasps, the room was dead silent.
"That was.. one h*ll of a fishing trip!"
My father pulled Bill into a hug that quickly turned into a kiss. They turned to the congregation and said, "Go forth and love each other now, as our boys would have done. We'll teach the world to love! I love my dead gay son!"
