Memory

Do you remember the times

When our friendship was at it's prime

We thought we were soul mates

But very different were our fates

None of us did any wrong at all

Except perhaps not giving a call

We have different friends now

And they're wonderful anyhow

Sometimes I wish I stuck around

Wish we didn't drift away and drown

Wish we could still talk the way we used to

Without recalling old times and feeling blue

Oh, I'm pretty sure I still love you

But you probably have no clue

Perhaps we were destined to be separated

And my efforts were too belated

But it's time for me to let you go

Let you travel, explore, learn, and grow

Our bond will remain as only a memory

As a distant daydream and sweet reverie

Recently, I visited a close friend I've known for 10 years. We drifted away during the pandemic, and for almost 2 years, we hardly talked to one another. But the second we started speaking, we clicked, it was like time hadn't passed at all and there was never a break in communication. We joked, laughed, talked with no filters. And yet, at the same time, something was missing, something had changed. There was no instant mind reading, and some part of our connection seemed to have faded away. As people, we were very different now. We had different hobbies, different likes and dislikes, different personalities. We'd each found a different best friend. I regret not making more efforts to stay in touch, but I also feel this was inevitable. As life goes on, people will come, and they will go. And that's alright. It was amazing while it lasted and I'll never forget our memories together.
