"the K-index quantifies disturbances in the horizontal component of earth's magnetic field'," liam read. he held his pencil to his lips with his eyebrows furrowed in concentration. "what's a 'K-index'?"

tay's heart melted as she stared at him with heart eyes. "you're so cute."

he blushed, not moving his focused stance. "you're goregous. but neither is the point. this work is the point. and so if the answer that i'm having trouble knowing."

mason gagged, not looking up from his laptop. "you two are so cute, i'm gonna go commit toaster to bath."

"but you and corey are doing good," tay told him.

"yeah, but your cuteness makes me wanna die."

liam chuckled. "have fun with that then. now, what the hell's a 'K-index'?"

"no clue." tay shook her head, taking her eyes away from liam and down at her math work.

"mason?"

"it's a scale that meteorologists use to measure thunderstorm activity," mason explained. "so, a K-index value less that twenty means no activity, and above thirty-five is severe."

"well, how bad's 'severe'?" liam questioned.

"well, your average storm has about one thousand lightning strikes. in the past three months, the average storm in beacon hills had five thousand."

"and what's it reading now?"

mason pressed a button on his laptop. "uh, fourteen. we're clear."

"ok, so if a spike in the K-index means more lightning, then we can tell if they're coming."

"yeah."

"so, we just rely on this thing?" tay checked.

"yeah!" liam chuckled, nodding. "this is good."

"yeah." mason also nodded.

then the monitor beeped. and the K-index thing started going up, up, up.
