As the shouting continued, she rushed back to the corner of the basement kicking the scattered bottles of poison further away as she went and scrabbled around the floor to find the hair clip she knew could open the door. She grabbed the pieces of jewellery and a lighter she'd left beside her makeshift bed and ran up the stairs, pausing at the top to turn around and run back down to grab the dead phone she'd discarded earlier and shoved the small collection of items into her pockets. On her way back she grabbed a crowbar she'd seen when she first entered the basement all that time ago and with that, she slowly unlocked the door and softly slipped back into existence.

The windows in the foyer of the hotel had been broken and she could see that the place had been ransacked, she thought about going back upstairs to try and find the rest of her belongings, but decided against it, she had no way of carrying them. Her battered suitcase laid on the basement floor, it was missing a wheel from its journey down and would make far too much noise to move.

She tiptoed intricately through the glass shards spread throughout the room, the rubber soles of her trainers keeping her from slipping on various liquids she didn't want to think too much about. The girl peered around the window frame, carefully avoiding a few shards that were still hanging on, scanning the area for any of the undead monsters that would look to make her their lunch. Carefully she climbed through the window and started moving down the street sticking to the shadows. Every corner the girl came to she repeated the same action of pausing and scanning the area until she was near to where the voices she'd heard were coming from.

The shouting had stopped shortly after she'd heard the screech of car tyres pulling away, but as she got nearer to where she'd thought the sound came from, she was sure she could hear more voices. They were muffled and unintelligible, barely audible from the street, but they were there.

She heard movement from a building to her left and ducked into the closest alleyway and watched as four people came out of a side door. The first was in a sheriff's uniform, he pulled a Hispanic kid out next with his hands bound behind his back and a piece of towelling tied round his face, they were followed by two guys in sleeveless shirts, one bigger black guy and a slightly smaller white guy. The three men were heavily armed.

Guns had always made her uncomfortable, coming from a country where they were very much not the norm, they were something she'd never really been around, but was very much aware of how lethal they were.

At the same time, these were the first living people she'd seen in so long and she didn't dare let them out of her sight. What was the worst that could happen, they shoot her? She'd been debating drinking bleach just a matter of hours ago, a bullet would be preferable to acid melting her organs.

She followed them, too afraid to make a sound or introduce herself, but too curious as to what they were doing with the apparent prisoner to walk away. Silently she moved like a ghost following them as they made their way to a red brick building where nearly all of the doors and windows had been boarded up.

When it became apparent that they'd reached their destination she ducked down behind a wall several feet from whatever was happening. She thought she heard a guy with a Latino accent yelling about guns and then just a minute later a strong southern accent shouted something about an old lady, after that the yelling stopped and the voices faded further away as everyone moved deeper into the building.

The girl waited a while, but when no more voices were heard, and she'd had a chance to think she decided her best bet was to do whatever she could to get out of the city. She started walking carefully, as she had before, but a few streets later she wasn't quite so lucky, her toe caught a glass bottle and it rolled down the path a little before dropping off the curb into the street with loud ding and promptly attracting the attention of three undead monsters.
