Her hand froze over a glossy black and white that showed a structure immediately behind the old Bransfield House.

Hut #7

According to the minimal description, only four men had worked here. There was no explanation of what their work entailed.

This has to be it.

The question was, was it still there?  Surprised at the date on the photograph, she realized that the scientists had perished only a month earlier and the hut was already boarded up. What had happened to their equipment, notes and journals?

Joanne noted the various antennae and poles nearby. It was the same familiar bell shaped dome that Sherlock had taken a picture of at the lab on Poison Island. They had left those, at least.

She showed it to Mycroft, who hadn't had a chance yet to go through all of the documents. "Well done, Joanne. At least we now know where the hut stood. From what I can tell, they only restored Bransfield House without having to move it. The hut should be easy to find now that we know its relation to the main building."

"If it's still there, you mean," Joanne put in.

"Correct, yes." Mycroft's eyes lingered on her as she went back to digging. It bothered him that this woman occupied his thoughts more often than he liked; her constant presence was becoming almost a habit. There was no doubt he would not let Joanne go once they were back in London - To keep an eye on Sherlock, he reiterated, though he knew the real reason. Mycroft liked having her around and, he realized, she made him happy. His stomach knotted in jealousy as he thought of cousin Julian. He had obviously made her happy, Mycroft thought bitterly. Would he be able to do the same? Could Joanne ever care for him the way she did his cousin? Although not possessing a competitive nature unless it involved his brother, Mycroft began to feel the small flame stir in his heart.

Julian has as much as given her to me. He thought back to his promise to him to look after her. If his cousin had wanted a romantic relationship with her, they more than likely would have announced a wedding by the end of the year. As it was, he had left her. Again. Not for the first time, Mycroft wondered why she put up with it, and suspected it was her inherent caring and  hopeful nature. He could tell from their interactions that she loved him, and that Julian felt the same towards her. He sighed, turning back to the laptop. Mycroft was sure of one thing. Promise or no promise, he sure as hell wasn't going to abandon her as well.

She is mine now.

Mine

He would make sure that she stayed on with them, using subterfuge if need be. To look after Sherlock, of course. A long term plan began to form in his mind, and he smiled.

Joanne didn't miss the self satisfied look on his face before opening the next folder. "What?"

A surprisingly innocent look at once appeared on his face, which told her there was nothing innocent about it. "Nothing! I can be happy, can't I? Smiling was allowed last I checked."
