detective!jk + journalist!sj

title ideas: RIGHT NEXT TO YOU, BY YOUR SIDE — something like that

major tags: violence, death, corruption, dystopia (i guess??)

Inspired by: a bunch of crime kdramas but the detective x writer idea was from "the good detective". i watched "the cursed" a while ago which also has a detective and journalist couple and that brought back this idea which i had in 2021

This fic is jk centric and focuses more on the actual story rather than jnkk's r/s BUT sj plays a big role in it. I have 2 different approaches to jnkk's r/s with this idea

IDEA #1 (my original idea)

jk's checking out a crime scene with his partner. spots sj being nosey but turns a blind eye to it bc he thinks sj's just a curious passerby. spots sj again at another crime scene that's supposedly related to the first one. asks sj what he's doing there and sj says he was just curious. tells sj to get lost.

finds sj AGAIN at another crime scene that's linked to the first two. sj walks away when jk spots him again. jk follows sj and sj starts running bc he knows jk's after him. jk jumps to the conclusion that sj's got smthn to do with the crimes -- perhaps sj is the culprit

sj says he's a journalist and he even shows his card but jk arrests sj and takes sj to the station. sj argues that jk cant arrest him w/o a warrant but jk's persistent bc he thinks sj is sus. jk interrogates sj at the station. sj ends up being released bc he has a strong alibi for all 3 crimes

they bump into e/o again when jk goes to visit a victim's family member to ask questions. jk finds sj there. victim's family refuses to cooperate with jk bc they dont trust the police and they think the police are covering up the truth. sj leaves while jk's still trying to get answers. jk ends up giving up and goes after sj for the answers since sj already has them. sj refuses to give them.

stuff happens and sj reveals that he's working on an exposé . jk tries to get sj to back down bc it's too dangerous but sj's persistent. sj doesnt care if it costs him his life coz one of his loved ones (parent? sibling? best friend? ex?) lost their life to this mess

jk sees all the info sj has collected n he starts doubting his own police department. jnkk end up working together. jk makes a promise to himself to protect sj no matter what

they fall in love somewhere along their team-up but they dont get into an official r/s bc things are too hectic . They end up becoming victim to what's going on as well.

IDEA #2

Jnkk married (or just engaged?). Very open with e/o about things going on at work. Jk confesses that there's some dirty business going on and he doesnt know if he can trust any of his workmates. Says he feels like everyone's trying to close certain cases w/o investigating them properly. Very suspicious of his team leader/higher-ups in his police dept

Sj does some digging at work and realises that the publishing company he works for is covering up all the crimes as well. tells jk that he believes his boss and jk's police dept are working together . Also warns jk to not get involved because it's too dangerous

both of them end up getting involved (it's inevitable). lots of action and angst. fast forward to the end of the story and the villain is taken down but sj is killed. jk falls into a major depression and quits his job.

idea #2 will have a sequel :

inspired by captain america: the winter soldier

jk is now an underground fighter. he has become quite the a-hole (but can you blame him? he lost his fiancé/husband). one of his former colleagues comes looking for him and finds him while he's beating an opponent unconscious.
former colleague informs him that there's a "copycat" villain/organisation that took sj's life on the run. jk tells the colleague to f off bc he wnts nothing to do with it. he doesnt give a sh*t about anything or anyone.

eventually jk gets involved. he's fighting a faceless (not literally) assassin/hitman. turns out it's sj but sj doesnt remember jk bc he's being mind controlled/his memories have been erased (advanced technology? unethical experimentation?). jk tries to convince himself that it's just a very realistic clone or robot of some sort but sj looks too real to be fake. eventually jk finds out that it's really sj.

stuff happens. fast forward to the end and they finally take the villain down for good by working together again

scenes im thinking of including:

- jk breaks the eye part of the assassin's mask during a fight so the eyes are revealed. jk recognises them instantly (how can he not? those are the eyes he was supposed to look into while saying "i do" at the altar!!!). goes "yeobo...?", in tears. sj is startled but shoots jk while he has the chance. misses (on purpose? unpreparedness?)—bullet pierces the shoulder when it was supposed to go through the heart.

- sj talks to the person controlling him/the villain—"do i know him?". villain asks why sj's asking such a question. sj just says "can i not?" and walks away. doesn't mention that jk said "yeobo" to him.

- sj doesnt know what he looks like so he doesnt believe jk when jk says the person next to him in his photos is sj. jk pulls sj's mask off and puts a mirror in sj's face to prove it. sj's memories slowly start to come back bc sj now knows what he looks like/he's finding out who he is.

if im feeling like a bitch then either sj sacrifices himself to save jk or vice versa 💀

i've been thinking about writing this story for a while but im not sure which idea to go with and it's going to take me a while to actually start writing it
