He senses her presence before he sees her. Sadly, hospitals are where they often cross paths these days.

"You're here," he stated, crossing his arms and not looking at her.

"I am," she returned. "This is the maternity ward. You are not often here."

"You know very well that I'm often here. Too often at times," he said. Finally, he turned to stare at her. He didn't need to look at her for him to know she would be beautiful.

A face that no one in the world of the living would see while they spent their time on Earth even though their life started through her.

A face he had been gazing at before the world even began.

They were created together, along with others of their kind. Two halves of a perfect whole. While others found other partners in the place where they existed, they remained together, never wanting to spend a moment apart.

They were created innocent, but not babies, and as soon as they learned from those who were made before them, they had allowed themselves to express their love in the purest and most intimate of ways.

He was hers.

She, his.

They were happy.

However, they were created for a purpose. Unfortunately, theirs would be one of the most difficult of assignments. Important roles given only to the most special of their kind, designed to be remarkable and yet cruel.

Life and Death.

Light and Dark.

One gives life. One takes it away.

Two halves of this cycle that most humans would have to go through to begin and end their time in the world. Opposite sides that bookend the different chapters each person will go through.

The commencement and the termination.

Never shall they meet.

"No, please. Please, I do not wish to be separated from him," she pleaded with their creator for many suns and moons. At one point, she wondered about his indifference and turned her frustration on him. In their private space, she asked with pain evident in her voice, "Does this not concern you? Is being apart something you wish?"

He realized his mistake then. His disbelief at their impending uncoupling appeared as acquiescence to her. Taking her into his arms, he kissed away her tears. "No. I hate this," he admitted. "I've been thinking of a way to stay together but I have come up with no solution."
