"I don't understand this, you know? How do they just get to uproot our lives and change everything so drastically?" asked a saddened Javier to his longtime, 3-year girlfriend Aiyana.
She looked around the room because looking at his face hurt way too much. "Baby, I don't know and as much as I wish I could give you an answer, I can't."
Her eyes began to swell up with tears, which to her felt as heavy as ice. Her chest felt as though it were heavy, what could she do? She thought to herself. How could she convince her parents that she needed to stay here? She couldn't even begin to fathom how different this new place would be. It was pretty much foreign to her considering she had lived in Brooklyn her whole life. Coming back to reality, she brushed her hands in Javier's hair as he laid in her lap. She felt the tears on his cheeks and wiped them away.
"I wish I could pack you up and take you with me."
"If only it were that simple."
It felt like a few hours went by when it had been only minutes, Aiyana's mother knocked on her door.
"Hey baby, everything okay? Can I come in?" Aiyana slid from underneath her boyfriend and walked, hunched over to the door, and opened it. Right away her mother could feel the sadness in the air, "I understand this is going to take a while to process but you guys can get through this, we will bring her back to visit as often as we can, and maybe if your parents are okay with it you can come and visit us? How's that sound míjo?"
Looking at her a bit more enthused than just a few minutes ago, he responded, "I think I would enjoy that, that makes me feel much better."
Well, it was time to go now, they had to get on the road and get moving if they wanted to be in Houston before tomorrow morning. Javier collected himself, gathered his things, and kissed Aiyana one last time before leaving her old home. She held in her tears trying not to make matters worse than what they already were. Would she ever see him again? She thought to herself, God I hope so. After all, she felt he was her soulmate, I mean why wouldn't he be? They grew up together, fell in love, and had been together ever since. It was the perfect love story but now it was being ruined. Or at least that's what it felt like.
The drive felt as though it took hours. It definitely took longer than that, but Aiyana's mind was in another place. Since they left, she hadn't received a single text from Javi. I mean come on, really? She thought. Not even a text? Let alone a fucking call. He was so sad to see her go but couldn't even reach out once and see if she had even made it to Texas? She rolled her eyes and shoved her phone face down in her blanket. She was laying flat along the backseat in her mother's Nissan.
Aiyana was an only child, so it was just her and mother for a long time. Until recently anyways, her mother met a man who she, (Aiyana) really didn't care for. He had to be about 60 from the way he looked, at least that's what she thought. He really was 35, but who's counting? Any who, he had been around a few months. He's the one who encouraged this dumb ass move, he's the reason Aiyana was uprooted from everything she knew and loved. And for that she hated him, but her mother loved him and she had to respect that.
Aiyana was so deep in her thoughts she couldn't hear her mom talking to her.
"Hello? Earth to Aiya? We're here are you going to get out and look at the house?"
Well, there they were. In Houston, a place she didn't want to be in the first place but in her mind she admitted, Wow. This house is huge. How can we afford this? She was excited to go inside. Maybe for a while it could take her mind off of Javi.
She put her phone on DnD, hopped out the car, took her mother's hand and walked inside to her new beginning.
