A Reflection of the Truth

I'm in much need of sleep,

But I'm afraid to close my eyes.

My mind tells me I'm dreaming,

But it tells me it's all lies.

It tells me it's okay,

That I have no reason to fear.

It told me it'd protect me,

From when danger was near.

I was naïve; I did not know

That monsters were deceiving.

I did not know that it really existed,

Until the day of our first meeting.

It was not a figment of my bare thoughts,

Or a false image hidden beneath my sheet.

This monster was real-

More alive than any other I've come to greet.

It told me it'd reveal itself

When I was ready, in fair time.

But the only thing the mirror showed me

Was a face I once called mine.
