Xzavier's big birthday bash took place only minutes away. Dressed to kill, the girls who lived in our apartment unit loitered near the front doors. They chatted bubbly about what was to come. Apparently, Xzavier's parties were legendary. I've gone years ago, and I couldn't say the same. It explained the lack of club goers, though Xzavier's power over the masses surprised me every time.
Grey and Luc stood a distance away, speaking animatedly to Troy, one of their classmates. Darrian sat not too far from where they conversed, but he was enrapt in Carly's presence. Between his legs, their faces were inches apart. Her body seemed misplaced against his in my eyes, though he didn't mind the proximity. An assured hand lay precariously high on Carly's exposed thigh and her bare arms reached to secure around his neck. I understood what he saw in her. Carly was bold, with no inhibitions. Lips the shape of cupid's bow, a dainty waist, even though I preferred more lush hips except for Ashlynn, and an appealing face. Seductive with fluidity. But what I didn't understand was why he put up with her antics. Was anyone really that worth it?
Why did I care? It was obvious Darrian didn't agree with my opinion and wouldn't for a long time. I would stay out of it like he asked. Taking my sights off the couple, I looked across the bar to where Kyley sat alone. Her gaze fixated on Grey, who intentionally kept his eyes from roaming. A woeful look contorted her features. But she didn't get up to talk to him. I thought they were fine, or at least getting there earlier, but I guess not. Swigging from my glass, I made my way to the seat beside her.
"Not dancing with your man tonight?" I questioned nonchalantly.
She huffed, and I couldn't help but smile. "He wants nothing to do with me."
It was my turn to huff. "Please Ky, that man would fall to his knees for you in just a blink. I told him to stop being a dumb ass."
Kyley laughed, finally taking that sorrowful expression off her face. She looked better with that twinkle in her sable irises.
"Why don't I find it hard to believe?" She snickered. "You know what? I don't even want to talk about it anymore. I'm tired of moping."
Ky captured the bar tender's attention, his intrigued gaze peeking down her shirt as she leaned over. With a hand around her forearm, I pulled her back down in her seat. She gave me a questioning look.
"You heard the girl, two shots each!" I called forcefully.
"Make it a double shot," Kyley added quickly. My brow cocked at her request. Sure hoped I didn't have to carry her out.
The bar tender cast me a fleeting gaze, not liking my tone but nodded anyway, a strained smile on his lips. The shots didn't rest on the tray for long before Kyley snatched them, throwing the alcohol down like a pro. Following her lead, I threw the shots back, one after the other. If she wanted to go hard, so would I. No one was here to stop us, couldn't tell if that was a bad thing or not.
"So heard Ashlynn ran out on you." Kyley had to raise her voice over the music that suddenly pulsated loudly.
I shook my finger adamantly. "Hell no. You don't wanna talk about your shit so I'm not talking about mine."
She winced. "Fair enough." She sighed. "Just thought we were good, but he's barely spoken two words to me. I already apologized a gazillion times; don't know what else he wants from me."
