THIRTEEN YEAR OLD MAEVE SLOAN WAS SITTING IN HER ASSIGNED DESK, to her left sat her friend, shawn mendes and to her right sat her second friend, madelyn cline. shawn and maeve knew each other first, seeing as shawn was the first child to live in the apartment complex, after he moved to seattle from toronto, canada. a year later, madelyn cline moved in to the same apartment complex, maeve made it her duty to introduce her to shawn, so the brunette girl wouldn't feel so lonely

the three have been friends ever since last year. now that the three were thirteen, and in seventh grade, they were inseparable and always protective of each other "ooooo, looks like the new kid already has eyes on you, maeve" madelyn teased as she noticed that the new curly blond boy would turn back from his seat to glance at the one and only, maeve sloan

maeve furrowed her brows "there's a new kid?" she questioned

"yeah, he's sitting next to grayson and damian" shawn said as the two glanced over to the front of the room

maeve waited for shawn to mention his name but he didn't "does he have a name?"

"that's dean salvatore" he answered before tilting his head at her "see you'd know that if you were here yesterday" shawn complained. whenever one of the three were absent, the group felt off

maeve scoffed "it's not my fault, that my long lost sister decided to show up" she grumbled at the thought of sloan riley showing up and stealing her father

"shouldn't you be happy?" madelyn asks

"yeah, you always wanted a sister" shawn added with a shrug

"i did, but a little one" maeve sighs "i don't like sloan"

"that's a first" he chuckles lowly "i'm sure she's not that bad, just give her a chance" shawn said trying to get her out of her funky mood

"absolutely not" maeve immediately said "not after my dad kicked me out of my room just so sloan could sleep there" she argues

madelyn's eyes widen "he did what!" she exclaims as her voice catches everyone's attentions

"i'm sorry, are we interrupting your conversation?" their first period teacher, mrs. rodriguez asks

both their faces are like a deer in headlights, maeve suddenly becomes embarrassed "i- sorry" madelyn mumbles

"next time i'm separating you three" she says pointing to the three who were at the same table

shawn rolls his eyes "god i hate her" he whispers

"i hate sloan" maeve added making madelyn chuckle

mrs. rodriguez head turned straight to the three "madelyn, get your stuff and go sit next to olivia" she said in a stern voice "grayson, switch places with maeve" grayson's seat just happened to be next to the new boy "these will now be your permanent seats from now on"

maeve felt her face heat up in embarrassment, her heart beating, she quickly picked up her stuff and made her way towards grayson's seat. as she passed grayson he spoke to her "hey, you're going to be okay" he assured her, knowing that she would get so much anxiety meeting new people

she sighs softly, repeating his words in her mind you're going to be okay. as she sat in her new seat, she began to fiddle with the ring on her finger "i'm dean" the blue eyed blond whispered over to the nervous green eyed brunette

but a symphony played when you told me your name

maeve slowly turned to glance at him, he held a nice, bright smile and she could have sworn his blue eyes sparkled as his met hers. a small smile tugged on maeve's lips, for some odd reason for the first time ever she felt her anxiety wash away "i'm maeve"
