It all started with a game

Chapter 10

"He's okay."

The two of them burst out laughing.

"So he's boring?" Klaus joked.

My face fell. "He is not!" He wasn't boring.

"Yes he is!" Sonny snorted. "You called him 'okay'."

"That's not what I meant," I tried to defend Ryder.

"Does he at least have some tragic backstory like the guys in your books?" Klaus teased, bringing my unhealthy obsession into the mix.

Sonny high fived Klaus. "Yeah, see, no one can think we're boring after hearing about our lives."

I rested my hands on my hips. "Oh yeah, and when was the last time you told someone about our 'tragic past'?"

Klaus nodded, enunciating my point. Sonny, on the other hand, refused to make eye contact.

I took a deep breath, my voice softening. "Wait, have you told someone, Sonny?"

Sonny fiddled with his fingers. "Just one!"

"Who?" Klaus wondered, his tone matching mine.

Sonny's answer was so mumbled that neither of us could make it out.

"Who?" I repeated.

Sonny walked ahead of us. "Maxon."

I had to bite back my cheeky grin. Sonny has a boyfriend. "How did that come up in conversation?"

The tip of his ears singed as he kept a good lead ahead of us, pushing the shopping cart. "Well, we were talking and then it escalated and we um, yeah, we like, okay—" he stuttered over his words. "We like, we," he paused. "Okay, I'm not explaining that part, you get the point. And we'll, I sorta had to tell him it didn't work because he was gonna notice that it didn't work but I couldn't just leave it at that because that just sounds wrong and so I had to tell him it got charred off to save my reputation and then I was embarrassed and I started crying."

The poor old lady at the end of the aisle looked like she was about to have a heart attack. I smiled at her, pretending that she hadn't just heard that.

Sonny didn't give us a chance to answer. "Okay, back to Beatrice! If he wasn't boring then what's wrong with him?" He refused to let us continue the conversation.

I wasn't going to pressure him. I knew it had to be hard enough for him to open up to someone. "He's just...different."

"So he's boring," Klaus tried to lighten the mood.

"No! He just—" I wasn't sure how to word it. He wasn't boring, in fact, there wasn't anything wrong with him, I just didn't understand him in the slightest. "He sleeps without a blanket!"

"What?" Sonny laughed.

"He sleeps without a blanket! Like he lays there like a board, with his feet exposed!" And I was off, the words tumbling out of my mouth like vomit. "And he can cook, like really well. He doesn't look like he should be able to cook. And he smells good, like the beach, but he's evasive. And he's rich, his house is huge but his room is small. And he let me put a blanket over his feet. And he's tall, but he's shorter than Klaus. He has a sense of humor. But Tenshi hates him." I finally took a breath, the first one through that whole paragraph. "And he smells really good!"

My brothers stared at me.

"Leaving me alone! I'm hungry and stressed." I tossed a chocolate bar onto the conveyor belt along with the other groceries and despite the fact that it wasn't on the budget, neither of my brothers dared to stop me.

I grabbed the bar the second it was paid for, tearing it open and taking an aggressive bite from it.

"The guilt is eating at you, isn't it?" Klaus popped up behind me.

"Yes!" I pouted.

Who came up with this idea? 'First one to fall in love loses' it's a horrible idea. How horrible of a person do you have to be to intentionally break someone's heart? Like what happens if I win? I don't want to hurt him.

I just want to be Tenshi's friend. Why does she have to be so hard to please?

Klaus wrapped his arm around my shoulders.

"I'm sleep deprived." I whimpered, taking another bite of the chocolate bar.

"I know, it'll be okay, we'll get you home and you can rest." Klaus soothed.

Klaus always knew what to say, Sonny on the other hand sprinted to the car the second he saw my eyes start to water.

Klaus took the liberty of carrying all the bags himself, letting me wallow in my own self pity while I sadly numed on my candy bar.

I really need a nap.
