37: The snowball of '84. (end of season 2)

She had a dress on, but no hairdo or makeup.

Hopper and my dad started talking, so I pulled El up the stairs.

"Come on." I said.

I pulled her into my room, kicking the door shut behind me.

I sat her down at my vanity and quickly got to work on her hair and makeup.

After ten minutes we were both ready and my mom was calling me back downstairs.

"Okay! You two need to go before you're late!" My mom pointed out, tapping her nonexistent watch.

"Oh, I love you so much, have fun, tell Dustin I said hi." She told me with a wink.

"Okay bye mom and dad! Love you!" I said quickly, rushing out the door with El and Hopper as my face burned red.

"Your face is red and warm." El stated, pressing a hand to my cheek.

"Yeah, uh, it's just-I'm just, I don't know, nervous?" I said with uncertainty as we got into Hopper's truck.

"It's okay." El said softly with a smile.

"Okay, kids, seatbelts." Hopper said, starting his truck.

The drive was fun. El told me all about how Hopper had adopted her and we laughed and talked.

"Okay, y/n? Your mom's picking you up after, right?" Hopper asked me as we pulled up in front of the gymnasium doors.

"Yeah. Thanks, Hopper." I said, getting out of the vehicle with El.

"Hey, anytime kid. We were all in that hell together, twice, we're practically family." He replied with a smile. "Have fun you two."

We walked into the gymnasium together and were immediately greeted by Mr. Clarke.

"Y/n! I thought that was you!" He remarked as I put my ticket in the ticket jar.

"Hey, Mr. Clarke." I greeted.

"This is my guest." I said, letting El drop her ticket into the jar.

Mr. Clarke nodded, beaming at her.

"Ah, well, welcome to Hawkins middle. We're happy to have you." Mr. Clarke smiled.

"Thank you." El said.

"Have fun!" He called as we walked into the gym, arms linked together.

At our school, the halls were decorated with posters and banners for the dance, painted in icy blues and silvers. The gymnasium was transformed, dripping with tinsel and streamers, with a disco ball and a punch bowl. Nancy stood behind a folding table, handing out refreshments, while Jonathan took photos against a paper backdrop. The whole place was full of boys in khakis and ties and girls with feathered hair and dresses filled out with shoulder pads. I spotted Mike and Lucas both looking awkward and uncomfortable in collared shirts and sports coats, the only difference being that Lucas was dancing with Max. A slow song was playing, 'Every breath you take,' a new and popular song by the Police. Mike looked up and saw El, and it looked like he had been hit with Cupid's arrow a million times.

What do you think? I think you're an idiot. (Dustin Henderson x Reader)Where stories live. Discover now
