hwa was lounging lazily on the ground of his cell when he heard footsteps approaching. he didn't bother opening his eyes until the footsteps stopped outside his cell, and the teen couldn't help being surprised upon seeing who had decided to visit him.

"hi, hwa! it's been a bit, hasn't it?" the cheerful voice of haewon exclaims and filters through the air, making the teen smile.

the korean woman was standing at the side of her supervisor, who was smiling faintly at her cheerfulness, but he nods at the inmate in acknowledgment.

"hello, no.20. how's your solitary been?"

hwa shrugs, lifting himself into a sitting position. "it's been alright. i'm guessing it's your turn to fill hajime's shoes, since kenshiro and the pheasant visited the last couple days?" haewon smiles and nods, and she moves forward while holding something, finally drawing his attention to what she had been carrying with her.

"mhm! i asked supervisor if i could visit you with him today, and since he said yes, i decided to bring you some food i thought you'd like!"

she places the plate down and pushes it forward for the boy, who looks it over before going wide eyed.

"is this bossam?" he questions incredulously, pulling the plate towards him and picking up his utensils to start devouring the meat. when he groaned in happiness upon the flavors hitting his tongue, haewon couldn't help the joy that practically flooded out of her.

"this is so good..."

"thank you! i wanted to get it just right for you. it's my mother's recipe, very popular with the community back home. there's not a lot of korean inmates here, so the cooks don't really make korean food a lot, and i thought you'd enjoy a little reminder of home," she says cheerfully, but her mood dims a bit once she noticed hwa's face fall at her words.

"i... actually haven't been to korea in a long time. i was caught after breaking out of some prison in thailand, and it's been longer since i've had any korean food..." he trails off, putting another piece of meat in his mouth and chewing slowly.

samon looks at the teen with barely hidden sympathy. haewon often mentioned how much she missed home despite getting visits from her mother occasionally, but it looked like this teenager, who had been on the run for years, hadn't even stepped foot in his home country for longer that that.

"well, it's not like i can complain. it's my own fault i'm in this situation, so there's no point whining about being homesick. it's not like i have a home to go back to, anyways," he continues nonchalantly, smiling at haewon before digging into the bossam once again. both guards give each other similar looks of sympathy over the young boy in the cell, but they understood that there wasn't anything they could do. he was an inmate, and he was in nanba for reasons beyond their control. he wouldn't be back in the outside world anytime soon as long as he was a prisoner here.

"what do you mean by that, hwa?" she questions softly, expecting the boy's mood to dim once more, but he just shrugs.

"i don't have a home. my parents gave me up when i was a kid, couldn't handle me. gave me to the bastard with the scar on his neck for money, and that was the last i saw of them. i honestly don't care anymore, and i've long forgotten their faces. i figured, if they could throw me away so easily, what's the point thinking about them and wondering what was so wrong with me that they decided they didn't want me."
