I looked in my mirror. Another year has passed, although I don't feel much different. As I look in the mirror I see my soft [h/c] hair, and deep [e/c] eyes. My hair was fixed up by a maid, due to the ball my father is hosting this evening for my birthday. I also received an intricate outfit that I was supposed to wear. It was made up of a white blouse, a deep blue vest, dark trousers, uncomfortable dress shoes ,and many frivolous jewels to show off the family's power and wealth.

Honestly, really wasn't looking forward to trying to get on the whole fancy getup. I always preferred more relaxed atmospheres, and outfits. Although, my father always insisted on the importance of dressing up for important events. I was just hoping that the chefs would make some good desserts for the event.

While I was lost in my thoughts I noticed the clock on my dresser showed that the start of the party will begin in just a hour. I quickly gathered the neatly folded clothes and began putting on the stuffy outfit and sat my silver crown on top of my [h/c] locks.

When I was finished I looked back in the mirror. Maybe I did look a bit different.

I walked out of my room, going through the long hallways of the castle. I began navigating my way to the ballroom, where the party will be held. As I walked through the corridors I could hear the muffled voices of posh rich nobles that my father invited to the party.

'Great,' I thought, 'now I'll have to deal with a bunch of people that just want to kiss my father's ass."

I let out a sigh, and head through the large spruce doors with intricate iron detailing. As I entered the room I immediately felt crowded and annoyed. I made my way through the room, greeting guests along the way, while I was looking around for my father. I finally met eyes with him. He was standing by the small band of instruments, discussing with a noble family from a few kingdoms away. I made my way towards my father dearest. As I approached him he finished his conversation. I then did a quick and polite bow to my father, and he did his small head nod.

"There's a lot of people here," I mentioned.

"Well of course, you turning 17! This is a very important milestone for you being a royal heir," father exclaimed.

"Why would that be? I'm not in line to be the next king, so why does my birthday matter so much?"

"Well, there's this unwritten rule where once a heir turns seventeen they should start focusing on their future as a part of the royal family. Whether that be them working on skills that will aid the family and kingdom, or looking for a partner."

"Ew," I sarcastically replied, playfully elbowing my father's side. We both chuckled, both non-verbally agreeing to leave the more serious subject of courting for later.

The sun was just setting when we started finishing the more formal part of the celebration, which included a speech from my father and receiving many congratulations from different nobles. I also got a small gift from my older brother, Finnle, and my younger sister Drella. They both got me a simple necklace with a locket. This all took roughly an hour or so. After that everybody was free to do whatever.

Most people were either chatting or dancing, while I was hiding at the snack table with small cakes and fruit. I was also extremely bothered by my annoyingly tight shoes. Honestly, I was hoping for some sort of way to escape from this crowded and stuffy room.

As I was looking around I saw a boy around my age. He had fluffy brown hair that was just a bit in his face, which slightly hid his eyes. He wore a simple white top with a light green vest and dark trousers. He also had a gold crown with a few yellow jewels that blended in well with gold. He must be royalty then. I saw him fidgeting his hands, and constantly trying to push his hair out of his face. I could tell he hated being here just as much as I did, if not more. Then I saw him look around quickly and hastily leave the ballroom.

I followed the boy, taking that chance to just get out of the humid room. I quietly trailed behind him, noticing that he was heading towards the castle garden. As he got further from the ballroom the calmer he seemed.

At this point I'm rather surprised at the fact that he hasn't noticed me yet. I was just silently following him for about eight minutes, just seeing where he would go.

Eventually I realized we were heading towards the castle's garden. After a couple more minutes he arrived at the large glass doors in pearly white frames made of probably quartz or some other white stone. Once he pushed through one of the door and entered the garden he looked around a bit, analyzing the large variety of flowers that were known for and all their colors. Once he sat down on the grass near our fish pond I decided to share my presence.

"Hey," I tried to say softly so that I didn't spook him.

"HOLY SHIt !" the boy cried out, quickly turning to look at who followed him.

"Sorry! My bad, didn't mean to startle you!"

"Oh my god you gave me a fucking heart attack dude! " he replied, dramatically clutching where his heart is. I lightly laugh.

"Once again, I apologize. I didn't mean to scare you, I just thought I'd say hi since I was following you," I laughed.

"This raises so many questions."

"Yeah, I guess it does, doesn't it."

"Yes, like why the hell are you following me?"

"Well, I saw you leave, so I figured I'd escape that cramped ballroom as well."

"Oh," the boy replied, "okay, uh... well would you like to sit with me?"

"Of course I would."

I smiled and sat down next to the young boy, looking over the fish pond under the night sky.
