|3rd POV|

Carlisle stares at the white envelope, the back of which holds a red wax seal with the Volturi crest on it.

With the rest of his family out hunting, he takes the time to read the letter from his dear friends.

He knows why this particular letter was sent or at least he believes he does. The events in Volterra have weighed heavy in his mind since Alice and Edward told him what he had seen.

Unlike his children, he doesn't think the mating between the kings and the young woman he has come to know, should be stopped. He believes that she could be good for the kings.

Emogen contains qualities that would help balance out the personalities of each one of them.
His children believe the Volturi to be blood-thirsty monsters who care about nothing but power, but they are wrong. The Volturi isn't the iron fist everyone believes them to be. They act that way to keep control, but those in the inner circle know that the Volturi is one big family.

Carlisle looks down at the letter seeing it is written in Aro's script.

Dearest Carlisle,

I write to you today to inform you that we are tasking you with watching over young Emogen Swan. You see old friend, she is our true mate and must be protected from all harm.

It has come to our attention while she was here that her sister seems to have something against her. She has already harmed our mate once and we cannot and will not trust her. I hope you understand that.

As much as my brothers and I would love to have Emogen here with us, we are giving her time to figure everything out for herself. She has already shown that she is very perceptive. She has been instructed to come and see you when she figures it out and that you would explain what a mate is to her. You are not to tell her any more than that, as that is for us to do.

I ask of you, our dear friend, to look after and protect her as if she were one of your own.

I would hate for you to see the consequences if you were to fail. She isn't just our mate, but also the future queen of the vampire world. As such, she should be treated with the same respect.
Best regards,

Aro Volturi

Carlisle was right in his assumption that it would be a letter asking him to look after their young and fragile mate. He is, however, disturbed by the mention of harm Bella committed against her sister. Alice and Edward seemed to have conveniently left that out. He would have to get to the bottom of that.

Carlisle puts the letter in the safe in his office and goes to sit down at his desk. He pulls out a piece of paper with his letterhead on it and starts to pen a response back to his old friends.

Dearest Aro,

I am glad that you and your brothers have found your true mate. You always did say that the three of you would share a mate. I shouldn't have doubted that.

Emma has always been incredibly perceptive to everything around her, and I must admit, I'm surprised it took so long for her to figure out what we are. I believe she has always known that something was different about us. She respected our privacy and never asked or dug further like Isabella.

I have no doubt that she will figure out that you are all mates soon enough. I will warn you that she is the daughter of the local police chief and is very much attached to him. She wouldn't leave him without explanation.
