The girl walked down the street lined with neon streetlights. Melaina was with her.
Melaina never spoke, but she was the girl's best friend. She was dark as the night and only appeared when there was light. Her silhouette was just like the girl's.
The girl had found Melaina as a child, and at first she was afraid of her. Her parents didn't know that she still kept Melaina as a friend — they thought it was just the girl's innocence and her imaginary friends. But the girl had never left Melaina, or Melaina the girl.
Melaina followed her and copied her in every action. She walked when the girl did walked. Sometimes she was taller than the girl, sometimes she was shorter.

Melaina was a shadow. She had found the girl in the darkness. When the girl saw Melaina's faint figure in the night, she knew there was light out somewhere, and that she was not alone. Melaina was where all the girl's secrets went. She was just a a dark figure following behind her, holding all her dreams and secrets, yet she was the girl's light at the end of the tunnel.
Shadows are reminders that there is light nearby.
