If life as a noble meant going to court and taking care of her dearest friend, Evangeline thought it was rather great. She still recalled the times where her father would mumble to their mother about having to find wives for her brothers with enough money, so they could help them live for a while. Evangeline was never really included in the talk, considering she had been chosen from a very young age to become Mary Stuart's lady.
Mary Stuart was her friend from childhood, and now her Queen.
As for now, they were in a carriage, on their way to Chenonceau's castle where they would live because Mary had been promised to Francois—future king of France. The carriage soon came to a halt, and she took this as a sign to exit it along with the other three ladies. As soon as she stepped outside, her eyes settled on the King, Henry II who was making his entrance accompanied by the Queen, Catherine and his mistress, Diane.
Evangeline was nowhere scared, on the contrary, she was rather excited for this promising life she had ahead of her. What could go wrong?
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the last carriage stopped and soon enough, Mary Stuart stepped out. Her first instinct was to turn her head towards the ladies and smile so widely. Her ladies rushed to her side, joking about how her hair looked like a mess and how she didn't seem to be a Queen at all—just a mere girl.
Weren't they all?
In the rush of excitement, Evangeline turned her head towards the crowd and scanned it. One man caught her attention, her breath instantly stuck in her throat and she gaped at him. From his look, it seemed he had noticed her too.
That was when she saw him for the first time without knowing that she would never ever be able to erase him from her mind.
