Author's note before we begin: the Thin Man is going to be known as Father throughout this story/AU. Despite being in third person, it is from Mono's POV.
Mono sat with his back to the cabinet leg. He covered his mouth to keep from giggling. Slowly, cautiously, he peeked out from his hiding place. He couldn't see Father anywhere. He heard footsteps and quickly pulled back. He accidentally let out a small giggle. The footsteps paused, then came rushing straight for his hiding spot. It was suddenly very quiet. Then, faster than the seven-year-old could react, a hand reached under the cabinet and snatched him up! Mono looked up into the eyes of his father.
"You found me!" Mono cried in a joyous, slightly teasing tone. He and his father both started laughing uncontrollably at that. Mono looked up at his dad. Father had a look of love in his eyes, a special love that he held only for his son.
After a few more rounds of hide-and-seek, Mono heard a mysterious voice in the back of his head. Father looked up at the sound, signifying that he heard it, too. He couldn't understand it yet, but Father said he would one day.
"Sorry, Mono. I have to go to work," he told the little boy.
"Okay, Father!" Mono chimed loyally. This happened often. He was more than able to take care of himself for a few hours. Father knelt on the floor, leaned over, and kissed Mono on the head. It was a little awkward, since the boy was a lot smaller than the adult, but neither of them minded. It was a part of life.
Father got back up and walked to the door. He looked back at Mono before exiting the room. Mono heard the creak of the stairs outside and listened as his dad went upstairs to the room where he worked.
Three months later...
Mono was playing with some toys in his room. Father was at work again, he'd had less time than normal to play today. As Mono played, he thought about what he knew about his dad's work. He knew that a living signal of some sort controlled him sometimes and let him live his life at other times. That was the voice Mono often heard, but never understood. He knew that Father couldn't resist the call of this signal even if he wanted to. That was okay with Mono. He was happy so long as he got some time to spend with his dad.
A few minutes later, Father walked in, startling Mono from his thoughts.
"Hello, Father!" Mono greeted, getting up and running over to him.
Father reached down and picked him up. He held Mono gently, as if he was fragile. Mono looked up at him, confused. Father was acting strange.
"Father?" Mono asked, watching his dad for some sign that he was alright.
"Mono," Father finally said, "the Transmission says that it's time."
"Time for what?" asked Mono, curious.
Father sighed. "Time to train you to take my place." He finally registered the confused look on his son's face. "You are to work for the signal we keep hearing someday," he clarified.
"Oh," Mono replied. "Can we still play together?"
"We'll see, Mono. We'll see." This response left Mono with more questions than answers, but he knew better than to push it.
Mono quickly learned that the voice in his head went by two names: the Transmission and the Broadcast. It not only commanded Father, but controlled him when needed. It also warped the faces and bodies of the people in the city below, but Mono was never allowed to see them in person. In fact, he barely left his room outside of meals and training. He began to hate this new way of life. Little did he know that this was only the beginning of a bigger adventure.
