The elderly shopkeeper handed you your sack of herbs with a distinctly disdainful look on his face. "You know," he growled, "we do have a rule about keeping magic secret around here. You can't just land in the middle of the street."

"Oh!" you exclaimed. "I'm so sorry! I didn't know!"

That was the honest truth. You were new to the area, only having just moved to the town next to this one. It was a human town, but a coven of witches existed within it, and they had told you that you could come here to buy herbs. They also said that the town was inhabited solely by a pack of werewolves, so you thought it wouldn't be a problem if people saw you fly in.

"Whatever," the shopkeeper snapped. "Just stay out of sight from now on."

Not wanting to start off on the wrong foot with the werewolves, you continued to apologize as you backed out of the shop, the doorbell ringing above your head. "Sorry, sorry," you said placatingly. "I'll land in the forest next time – ahh!"

You cried out as you bumped into something solid and fell, your familiar being thrown from your shoulders with a terrified screech. However, before you could hit the ground, a pair of strong arms caught you. You found yourself staring up into the most gorgeous eyes you had ever seen.

"Idiot," the male hissed, his voice cold and sharp as ice. "Watch where you're –"

He stopped talking abruptly, those piercing eyes going wide as he stared down at you. However, you were too embarrassed to dwell on his strange behavior. Your only focus was on apologizing, as you had – yet again – made a bad first impression on the werewolves.

"I'm so sorry!" you exclaimed, still breathless from the fall. "I wasn't watching where I was going. My bad."

The werewolf said nothing, continuing to stare at you with a shocked expression.

Your brow furrowed in confusion, and you opened your mouth to ask if he might, perhaps, let you stand up now. You took a breath, readying to speak...when something piqued your curiosity. This close, you were enveloped by his scent, and he smelled good. Typically, werewolves smelled like...well, dogs...but not him. He smelled of crisp, clean breezes, of oakmoss and vetiver. It was such a perfect blend that you assumed it had to be cologne – very expensive cologne, at that.

"You smell amazing," you whispered before you could stop yourself.

As soon as the words had left your lips, you realized how weird of a thing that was to say, and you mentally slapped yourself. Now, he probably thought you were a creep as well as a klutz.

He certainly seemed offended, because he finally snapped out of his reverie and set you rather unceremoniously on your feet. You noticed him take a sizeable step away, putting distance between you.

Once you both were standing, you managed to get a good look at the rest of his form. He was small for a male, but extremely well-built. He had silky black hair styled in an undercut, sharp features, and perfect, pale skin. Not to mention, the piercing, gunmetal eyes that took your breath away with just a glance.

"Tch," he growled. "Go home, you stupid witch." Then he turned on a heel and walked away.

He was being rather harsh, but then again, you did nearly knock him over. Plus, he did save you from cracking your skull on the pavement, so that was something. "Thank you!" you called after him.

He paused, and for a moment, you thought he might look back at you. But then he shook his head and kept walking. You couldn't help but notice how his muscles rippled as he did so, visible underneath his fitted t-shirt. Goddess, werewolves really were strong.

"What a rude dog," (c/n) scoffed from the ground, licking the imaginary dirt off of her fur in a distinctly offended manner. "Someone should've trained him better."

"Don't say that. Werewolves hate us enough already," you chided. Personally, you couldn't understand why witches and werewolves had such low opinions of each other. Sure, werewolves were different, but that didn't make them bad people – or creatures, or...whatever the proper term was. And obviously, the two races could get along well enough to trade herbs and such, so why shouldn't they be able to coexist without hating each other? However, you seemed to be an oddball in that way of thinking. Everyone else was content to let things go on as they were.

"Fine, fine," (c/n) muttered airily. "Can we just go home? I don't like the way they look at me."

You sighed, then held out your arm. (C/n) eagerly climbed up and settled on your shoulders, peering apprehensively at the werewolves around you. Then you walked until you found a secluded alley, and after making sure no one would see, you took to the skies.

------------------------------------------

You breezed into your home, placing your broom and hat in the cupboard before heading to the kitchen with your herbs. You methodically began putting them away, but as you did so, your mind kept drifting to that werewolf, to the way he had looked at you...

"You're distracted," (c/n) observed. "What is it?"

"That wolf today," you murmured thoughtfully. "The one I ran into. I can't explain it, but I...I feel like I know him from somewhere."

"But you can't have met him before, can you?" the feline asked. "That was your first time in their town."

"No, I don't think I've actually met him before," you agreed. "It just feels that way. Like I hadn't met him, but I knew him. Does...that make sense?"

"Hmm. Perhaps you're having premonitions?" she suggested.

You shook your head. "You know that's not my gift. Ugh, maybe I'm just imagining things."

"Probably true," the cat agreed. "Best to just forget about the dogs altogether."

You continued putting your herbs in the proper cabinets, but no matter how hard you tried, you couldn't stop yourself from thinking of that male again. "Did you notice how good he smelled?" you asked pensively.

If cats had eyebrows, (c/n) would have been raising hers. "Good? Are you sure you're okay? He smelled just like all the other dogs – and they're enough to make your hair curl."

Your brow furrowed. "No, he...he smelled clean, like a fresh breeze, mixed with vetiver and oakmoss." You could recall the scent so clearly, almost as if you were smelling him now. "He didn't smell like a dog – that's why I noticed. I thought maybe he was wearing cologne."

"I think you need to get your nose checked," (c/n) grumbled.

"And the way he was looking at me..." you mused, ignoring her jab. "It was so strange."

The cat rolled her eyes. "You've never seen pure loathing before?"

You tsked, closing the last cabinet and turning to face her. "Not that. I mean right after he caught me. He was staring at me like...like...I don't know." You tried to think of how to describe it, but you got distracted as you pictured his face, his eyes. He was the most beautiful male you had ever seen, you realized suddenly. And when his piercing eyes were focused on you, it made you feel so...so...

Your familiar padded over and placed a comforting paw on your foot, yanking you from your reverie. She looked up at you with her big, round eyes and stated, "Dogs never make sense. That's why you have a cat, remember?"

You smirked, chuckling a little. "Alright, alright. Come here and get a treat, then."

"Yes," she hissed under her breath, and you chuckled again as she happily followed you to the stash of feline goodies.
