Dearest reader,

Welcome to The Dream Before the Dark! I am so excited to finally dive into this book after sitting with this idea for a few months while I was writing The Way We Learned to Love.

This works as a stand-alone book, so all are welcome to read! Although it is technically another prequel to my previous two books The Search for Lily Myers and The Way We Learned to Love, no knowledge of the characters and events in those books are required as this one takes place over two decades prior. I may throw in a few tiny lines of foreshadowing here and there that you probably won't pick up on if you haven't read those, but there won't be anything that impacts your comprehension or enjoyment of the story.

This is my first time writing something that doesn't take place around present-day and my goal is to avoid any accidental cultural references that wouldn't have existed in 1992 or catch them when I'm editing, but in the event that something that doesn't make sense makes its way into the book please (politely) let me know!

disclaimer / content warnings

• sarcasm

• gaslighting

• annoying men

I don't anticipate any content that's mature or warrants a trigger warning, but if anything arises I'll put a note at the top of the relevant chapter(s). Examining the challenges that women face is a central topic/focus of this book, so there will be broad discussion around sensitive topics like harassment and abuse, but those won't be graphic.

The protagonist will also be critical of religion (specifically Catholicism) and the types of harmful behaviors that religious structures sometimes allow to perpetuate. My intention isn't to disrespect anyone's religion but rather to explore how many people have confusing and complicated relationships with their religion and other people within it. My approach is meant to be representative of real-life experiences, not overly-critical for no reason.

My character's opinions do not represent my own.

TL;DR  sensitive topics will be discussed, but there shouldn't be any graphic content
