Bubbles: Alright this is a super important chapter for any Novus out there. The Choice simply put is when a Novus chooses whether or not they wish to continue being a merperson and if so, what kind.

1) When Do Novi Make the Choice:

- A Novus transforms from their human form into their first merperson form. Basically, they're swapping out their legs for a tail. This happens whenever a Hatchling reaches maturity. Generally, most Novi will make the choice during their teenage years or twenties. In rare instances, I have heard of Novi being rather shocked to discover their supernatural roots in their thirties, though.

Thankfully, when a Novus first transforms there is an instinctive magic in place that keeps humans from seeing their tail. Unfortunately, this only lasts until they reach the ocean. Otherwise it'd be a lot easier to hide.

-They will be escorted to a settlement where they will learn about life under the ocean. These settlements are scattered all over the world's oceans and seas. Usually, they'll be lead there by an Amissa, group of Amissas, or perhaps by their merpeople relatives if they're really lucky.

- After living in their new aquatic home for awhile they will make their Choice. No one knows when their Choice will happen. Most Novi stay Novi for at least a couple years before transforming, but some hybrids make the leap within weeks of gaining their tails. Others might stay Novi for a decade or more.

2) How Does It Work:

No one is really sure what triggers the Choice. Eventually, though the merperson will be wrapped in some type of magic. What this looks like varies greatly depending on what kind of merperson they're transforming into.

This is all done instinctively. Just as a caterpillar doesn't decide what kind of butterfly it wants to be, neither does a Novus. Still, they can take comfort in knowing there are only so many possibilities: Anguis, Bellator, Calidum, Primus, or Protegere.

3) What About Amissas:

No one can 'choose' to become Amissas. Amissas are 'born' when a merperson dies with Unfinished Business. Whenever this is resolved, they 'move on.' Where they go is a matter of great speculation.

4) More Information about The Choice:

The Choice is considered highly sacred. Once a Novus makes their Choice they are biologically identical to any other merperson of that species. For instance, there is no physical difference between a Bellator with two human parents or a Novus who became a Bellator.

Of course, culturally there is always an adjustment period, but merpeople have tried to soften that with Novi Settlements and The Gathering. The Gathering is held once a year and allows Novi to travel with groups of other Novi and at least one representative to all the different kingdoms. Think of it as a college tour.

5) Is the Choice Permanent:

For the most part, yes. There are no take backsies here. The only exception is if a Novus who made their Choice becomes an Amissa after death.

6) What About Other Supernatural Wild Cards:

Depending on the species, merpeople can sometimes become hybrids.

For instance, it is possible for a merperson to become a vampire. Though their tails will remain save for the full moon unless some serious magic is involved.

A merperson who is bitten by a werewolf will be able to transform into a wolf, though I really wouldn't recommend it unless they did so on land or near the shore and so on.
